Well, it looks like the goblins sat this one out. So I guess we have to contend with the leftovers as James & Mike play Ghouls' N Ghosts for the Sega Genesis: -But first let's go the Chronologically confused route where we learn that it goes Ghosts' N Goblins (Arcade game and the NES game), Ghouls' N Ghosts (the second Arcade game and this game here that they play), Super Ghouls' N Ghosts (the SNES one that had no Arcade release) and something called Ultimate Ghouls' N Ghosts. If this video had come out today, they would have probably also mentioned the new Resurrection title. Also nice that Mike possesses some of the Arcade marquees (I wonder how many of those for different games he has). -Love how they talk about this show itself with James mentioning one of the reasons in doing this (just doing something game-related without a script, originally planning to do this solo without Mike, apparently they also did a pilot episode with a game called Alien Storm which they didn't release or at least it is not in the J&MM playlist). Though they do get kinda confused with their multiple part games. -From the looks of it, the graphics are decent (like the animation for those wallheads especially, much more lively than the stone bird heads in the SNES one) though some of the enemies look not as good as the SNES one. Pro: you can shoot your weapon up. Con: no double jump in this game. Also kinda sad that the boss in the SNES game is reduced to a regular enemy here and you fight a giant fly as the final boss (?). -An interesting question: what is the most faithful Dracula adaptation of the book (and which one actually includes the "Do you vant to make toilet?" line? ). Neat to hear him mention the Jess Franco Dracula from 1970 which I have heard from various sources is among the most faithful Dracula works (despite being made by the director who gave us "The Castle Of Fu Manchu"). James gives his credentials to a 1970s BBC mini-series which was pretty faithful and also namedropping some other Dracula movies (including namedropping German actor Klaus Kinski...awesome). Actually a really interesting Dracula discussion they got going on there. -OK, of all the Ozzy Osbourne stories I have heard, that dove one is definitely the most bucked up one. The bat one (which they already mentioned in another episode way way way before) I could kinda understand because it was a misjudgment but that dove one...ewwwww. -Interesting to hear about Bob Ross using various colors to draw a sky and not just using blue...though it does make me wonder if Bob Ross ever drew a Hell landscape. -Dang, that Ghostbusters (1984) question by Mike....Makes me really feel like there is still an empty spot in my knowledge box by not having seen it. Anywho, where do you stand on that Gozer question? -Fascinating to hear them mention what they like about Halloween: for Mike, it is mostly the season and how the trees and the weather feels (he accentuates that he doesn't mean the fall season in general but just how it feels around Halloween time) while for James there are various things (horror movies being shown at cinemas that he can watch in a large group, the Halloween decorations etc.). -Love James's gasp expression when that chest reveals the flame weapon and how he'd rather kill himself than trying to jump over it. -Not all videos can end on a good note as James cannot beat the final boss although they tried for an hour and thus get put behind schedule. He at least learned not to get to that boss with the sword weapon next time. -Definitely an awesome episode with lots of interesting discussions and an entertaining game to watch them play. Definitely scraping that Top 10 J&MM episodes list.

Back when I got my Sega Genesis GHouls and Ghosts was the first game I bought. Never was much of a fan of the previous games. But that entry I played the hell out of it. Mostly cause after about a week I was tired of Altered Beast, the pack in game when I bought my Genesis.
Going back and playing Ghouls and Ghosts now... Yea not for me. I like hard games but either my reflexs have slowed down in my old age or I had more patience when I was in my teens.

Let's search for treasures in these blasted caverns and hopefully get the right keys when James & Mike venture into Catacombs Of Nemon for the PC: -A very nostalgic game for James due to it being in a collection of games his grandfather had (on floppy disks back then...feels like a life time ago even though I do remember them, too) and this was his favorite game. Kinda fun to think of James also having non-console games that he really liked. -That's certainly one powerful flashlight and the differences between the quests are certainly noticiable (lowest difficult = keys are visible all the time, medium difficulty = keys become visible when you shine on them, highest difficulty = keys are invisible all the time and you have to remember their location when seeing the number), making it appear to be an entertaining game. Though the minotaur kinda looks more like a unicorn to me. -OMG, James is really into those sounds of the game (and they certainly sound like the perfect encapsulation of what a 1980s PC game sounds like). He even mentions that he used Catacombs Of Nemon sound effects in reverse in his Polybius AVGN episode. -The biggest question: In which game could have James seen those rock textures already? The world may never know. -Good to hear that Simon Belmont will be in the next Smash game (whatever the new Smash game announced was back in October 2018). -Overall, a short but sweet video where you can tell that James definitely had fun with it.

Uh-oh, hopefully PETA will not watch this video or they may have to close up the whole show when James & Mike play Duck Hunt for the NES: -Playing it on the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt double cartridge which I guess was the most common game to be included with the purchase of the NES. This prompts Mike to make a clarification: when he mentioned a while ago that Ghostbusters was his first game on the NES, he meant that as in the first separate game he bought and not as the first game in total (since that would be the Super Mario/Duck Hunt cartridge). Interesting to note.
-I played Duck Hunt a few times but never paid it too much attention as a child.
-Kinda irritating that you need to have both a controller and the light gun in the ports to make the selection between Super Mario and Duck Hunt (also that you have to shoot in the air to make your Duck Hunt selection). Neat to hear that James is a bit confused about why the red Zapper seems to be more popular than the original grey one...my thought would be that Captain N had a red Zapper so that one made more of an impression in people's minds?
-Love the story of how James and his friends would use the Zappers to play Cops'n Robbers in the living room with the TV providing the sound effects. Certainly one additional way to use the Zappers.
-Of course, they go into a bit of detail with the Zapper (how it is best used with the old TVs instead of the new flatscreen TVs where it doesn't work, the lightbulb trick that never worked for James etc.) and how James actually felt like the lightgun games were just a fad that would come and go into obscurity (mostly because he had some bad games that didn't really work with the Zapper). But playing it like this appears to enjoy him very much.
-Have to agree that those ducks look too cute to be shot. Certainly cuter than the Moorhuhn in the games of the same name (dunno if those games are even known outside of Germany. Wiki mentions the release names in English as Crazy Chicken or Chicken Hunter so those names might ring a bell).
-I am wondering what is the highest round you can get to in Duck Hunt....20? 30? 50?
-At the time, I definitely agree with James & Mike that they should go for the obvious ones since they mention that one of the reasons they haven't done Duck Hunt yet was because it was just too obvious a choice. I'd say screw that, I don't care if you do the famous games as long as the result is funny. At the moment I cannot recall if their resolve was paid off but we shall see in the remaining videos.
-Despite them having probably most of the games in their original form, of course, they couldn't resist getting the NES and SNES Classic (although Mike mentions the hassle in actually getting one of those). Overall, they have a positive opinion of them with their only nitpicks being some game omissions (like not having Chrono Trigger on the SNES Classic or Contra on the NES Classic despite having Super C on it).
-Love James's incredulous expression when Mike mentions and shows him the Commodore 64 classic. I wonder if that one ever amounted to much sales. Makes me wonder if there is even an Atari 2600 Classic around?
-Overall, another very funny video with a classic game and some entertaining iterations by James & Mike.

There is a few Atari Classic like systems. The best was the Atari Flashback 2. It was easy to hack and add a cart slot to it.
The C64 Mini is decent. A later model IIRC comes with a working keyboard. Plus like most of these mini/classic systems it is easy as hell to add games to it.

I've been getting into some of Mike's longplay vids. Finished him and TMNT (with only Mikey). Starting his SMB Trilogy vid. Have to say that I haven't been interested in watching LPs (prefer watching the World Of Longplays videos instead where you can hear the background music and not have someone talk over the gameplay) and while I enjoy Mike in those J&MM episodes, the various things I have heard about Mike over the years (the whole Bootsy affair, that he did a livestream one time where he was hopped up on goofballs and cursed and insulted his livestream audience all the way, other stuff like he apparently did racist art at one point) made me a bit wary of him. Yesterday, I was bored, figured "what the hey", looked at his home page at the list of games he beat on stream and watched the first part of him playing 1943 for the NES...and I enjoyed it. Will continue watching it since I now figure "I watch wrestling which has 100% the background scumminess that Mike did so no problem in watching this" and looking forward to his livestreams if I cannot see him on Cinemassacre anymore.

See since he first appeared on a AVGN ep I haven't liked Mike. Something about him just rubs me the wrong way. Then add in how he treated the AVGN fans on the AVGN reddit, banning people for asking questions. Plus Mike posting a picture of his unit to Twitter....
Hoping with Mike gone this means Bootsy might come back. I would love to see James and Bootsy Mondays or the return of Bootsy Beats.

Bootsy left/was fired. From what Bootsy has said it was over music he wrote being used on the Board James DVD/Blu Rays and Bootsy not getting his cut of the money.
Not long after Bootsy was gone Mike got control of the AVGN Reddit. If Bootsy was mentioned the comments were deleted and whoever made them was banned.

Even in his youth years, he had to contend with Germans, snakes and death traps. Can James & Mike safely guide him when they play Instruments Of Chaos...Starring Young Indiana Jones for the Sega Genesis? -OK, did the guy who would eventually do the AEW YT channel video titles get his start on Cinemassacre? Because we suddenly get some weird "Can James Rolfe And Mike Matei Survive Young Indiana Jones For Sega Genesis!?" video title instead of just naming the game, the console and it being a part of James & Mike Mondays. -Yeah, that game name is really a mouthful and I can just imagine when you put it among your other games, forget about it for a while and when you look for a game to play, you just see "Instruments Of Chaos" on the side without realizing that it is an Indiana Jones game. -Wow, what a great way to start a game: getting killed by a fish pushing you into a lake where you drown (I was gonna comment on Indy not being able to swim...then again, it is the Tibet level and their are ice floes on it so it would not be pretty comfy for Indy being in that water). -While never playing the game or watching the Young Indiana Jones TV series, I had three of the books for some reason (dunno if they were just novelizations of the TV show episodes or original stories). Mostly remember an 8-year old Indy graphically describing how a mummy is made and him meeting Pancho Villa in one book and me desecrating the book by using a red-colored pencil to draw the route of Indy in the respective book just like in the movies. -Fitting how the Tibet level makes Mike think of the Atari 2600 game Frostbite and how much more fund that game is. -Holy bleep, how many animals are attacking you at once in the India level, causing Indy to get bounced around like a rubber ball? -Yeah, that "whip" looks like poop compared to the Super Castlevania IV whip. That one looked pretty cool while this one here looks like it would actually be more fitting in an Atari 2600 game. -Even Indy is like "I dunno what I'm doing riding on top of an elephant". -And for some reason, they made it through the India level despite not doing anything special in that last screen. -Have to agree, it does look funny seeing Indy getting electrocuted by lightning in the London level. -Oh my, I certainly laughed right along with them when they mocked Indy's "getting blown away by a sand storm" motion. Definitely should have belonged in a future Crack Up video if they made one more. Still, how much the sandstorm pushes you back is downright ridiculous -Oh well, back to Tibet we go where Mike goes pretty flawless through the ice floe part (sadly unknown to James who cannot look at it anymore out of anxiety). -How fitting that at one point when climbing the tower with your whip that Indy looks like he hanged himself. What a more apt description of the game could you want? Also, it is as if the game knew that it would be tough, giving you 9 lives to start with and a rather generous health bar. -Those movie location trips sound like a blast (James having done a 1984 Ghostbusters location trip himself) with them wondering if a Home Alone 2, Seinfeld or other such trips in New York are possible. -And so Indy dies by getting pushed off a tower by Dick Tracy. What a terrible way to go-go. -To conclude, a very funny video due to it being a terrible game and James & Mike having fun mocking it. Definitely a highly recommended one.

It is time again to become the fastest racer alive by making F-1 look like a snail race when James & Mike play BS F-Zero Grand Prix 2 for the SNES: -As we learned the last time (when they did The Legend Of Zelda), BS doesn't stand for the usual but for Broadcast Satellite. I cannot remember exactly what it means (something about a limited time gaming event that you could access by a special accessory where you played these games) but Mike in the LoZ and James here do a better job of explaining it. -Woah, that's a mighty dangerous shortcut they got there, yikes. Luckily, James gets pretty good at it after a while. -F-Zero GX sounds like a really radical game that I would have loved to see them do. Alas, it didn't came to be (as far as I remember). -Oh my, the story of the Punisher video game and the kitty kat puzzle. Has to be heard to be believed. -For some reason, a lot of talk about Double Dragon III for the NES in regards to the AVGN episode back then, how Mike has actually beaten it in the meantime and finds it monotonous etc.. It would have been kinda nice if they did this game as well (considering they did the first two NES games in the early days) but another thing that didn't came to be. -They actually reply to a thought I had by mentioning that what they know is that there is a BS Super Mario Bros. game and a BS Excitebike. Perhaps there might be even more? Who knows? -Overall, a decent short video with seeing a rare F-Zero game and both having some fun discussions during it.

Luckily, this time there are no elephants to be found so I think James & Mike will be OK when they play Donkey Kong for the Game Boy: -I remember seeing this game get a huge article in the Super Game Boy Guide which is what I mostly remember about it. I never actually played it.
-Definitely an interesting concept with the first four levels being recreations of the Donkey Kong levels most were familiar with from the Arcade or the various ports and it then becoming more of a puzzle solving game.
-Interesting trivia from Mike regarding the release at that time (Nov. 2018) of the original Arcade Donkey Kong to the Nintendo Switch library (as in the real original Arcade version in comparison to the adjusted-for-console-limitations ports of Donkey Kong) and also a lost NES game called Sky Skipper. Wondering if that one made any headlines with gamers.
-Pauline's "Help! Help!" somehow reminds me of Penelope Pitstop's cries for help (and I now I would have wanted Donkey Kong to have the Hooded Claw's laugh).
-For some reason, we get a discussion about the Batnipples in the Joel Schumacher Batman movies and a Batman discussion in general. From what I get of it, both of them don't seem to dislike the Schumacher movies on the same level that somebody like Doug Walker does which is their fair opinion. Though I don't want to think deeper about whether those batnipples are customsized to actually fit the nipples in there.
-Mario sure is a ladies' man what with Pauline, Peach, Daisy etc.... I bet Tommy Dreamer would declare Mario even more hardcore than himself. Also, yeah, Pauline is obviously the Fay Wray expy but who would Mario be based off of when we look at the original King Kong?
-James again reminds us why he doesn't have as much nostalgia for the Game Boy as others, that being he never travelled around as much with his parents and with Game Boy games being as expensive as NES/SNES titles, he invested more in those latter games than the former (though he did own a Game Boy and a few games for it).
-Wow, Mike actually came to the wisest conclusion at a young age: Why would you ever gamble when it is based on luck and it costs real money (in regards to slot machines mostly). Let's hope he keeps that up throughout his life.
-Sweet that Mike has found a Famicom version of Super Mario Bros. which he shows James in its original box cover. Sadly, their plans to do the various original Mario games only led to them playing only the third one and as for the first SMB game...we will talk about that later.
-All in all, a fun video with an interesting game and some fun discussions.

*sings* Under the sea, under the sea, darling it's better...to play a game like when James & Mike do The Little Mermaid for the NES: -Yeah, I agree with them, that is a mighty good 8-bit rendition of Under The Sea. -Seeing this game and who made it, makes me think that it probably shouldn't have been The Disney Afternoon Collection but rather The Disney Capcom Classics Collection or something so that they could have included this game as well. I actually thought that they could have kinda made it work anyway...then I saw that that Little Mermaid TV series was broadcast somewhere else and was not a part of the Disney Afternoon line-up (yet in that line-up were also other movie-related TV series like Aladdin and The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa...weird). -Of course, this gives them a chance to talk a lot about The Little Mermaid in general like how it was the last traditionally animated Disney movie to not have any CGI elements in it (after The Great Mouse Detective introduced some CGI elements in the Big Ben scene), how Ursula was a really creepy character with her collecting souls and what those poor, unfortunate souls (wink, wink) looked like afterwards, her gruesome demise (which makes them think about stuff like The Little Mermaid vs. Jaws and how the shark in that movie was never actually called Jaws), James dropping the pipe bomb on Mike about how the original fairy tale of The Little Mermaid went etc.. Certainly some interesting discussions around here. -OMG, James introducing Mike to the creature known as the mantis shrimp. Definitely an interesting underwater creature and it would actually be suitable as a monster for Godzilla to vanquish in a future movie. -I was curious because at the point where they finish the game there are still about 7 minutes left in the video...so what better way to pass the time than going to a completely different day where James & Mike play Chip'n Dale 3: Vietnam for the NES? -This is actually weird for them because...why not make two separate videos for both of them? It's not like they haven't done shorter videos in the past or anything. Strange. -Anywho, this game is a hack of an NES game called Heavy Barrel where the two soldier characters are replaced with chipmunk characters who are supposed to be Chip and Dale (though one of them is blue for some reason, making them look more like the squirrels from The Nut Job rather than Chip and Dale). -Grand Theft Auto Disney....that would certainly be...something. -Interesting story about Walt Disney's original vision for Epcot. Kinda reminds me a bit of the Stark Expo in the Iron Man films. -Overall, an interesting video featuring two games for the announcement of one with some interesting discussions thrown in.

Last year I got this gameboy looking NES on a chip clone system. ON it is the Chip&Dale Heavy Barrel hack.
Little Mermaid on the NES is a blast. Sure I beat it the first time I played it. But it is fun. So I end up replaying it at least once a year.

I am sure Dracula is pretty annoyed by our house calls by now but perhaps he secretly enjoys a good whipping. We shall see when James & Mike play Castlevania for the NES: -At first you might go "Yay, they are finally doing another one of the classic NES games!"...but then you realize that they want to make a challenge out of it. Basically, you are not allowed to use the whip during the whole level except for the boss fights and the candles in the boss room after the boss comes alive. We shall see how these episodes hold up because I remember not liking the "Challenge" phase of James & Mike Mondays too much. Perhaps it was disappointment because they didn't play these classic games in a normal manner but with these challenges attached or something else, I cannot remember. Let's go into it. -This episode has a really weird set-up with the screens (both the James & Mike footage and the game footage) being curved inwards. Dunno if it is a one time thing or if it is something they will more often from now on. -Yeah, no whip upgrades, no getting to those turkey legs behind the rocks, having to jump over enemies...this is certainly something for someone who has played Castlevania lots of times (as Mike admits that he had been doing Castlevania often recently). -They actually manage to clear the first stage quite alright (even past the merman part) with Mike's biggest problem being that it is so weird having to fight the giant bat without any secondary weapons (at least one of the candles in the room has the whip upgrade). -Leave it up to Dr. James to lecture us on Medusa and the Gorgon sisters and stuff (with them bringing up the interesting point that the second level boss is not really based off of any Universal or Hammer horror monster). -Oh my, the lyrics they come up with for the second level music. Mike should challenge BrentalFloss to a video game lyrics creation contest one of these days (just kidding of course). -Jesus, either they lowered the sound in post or Mike big "F***k"s after being killed by the second level boss were so loud they broke the mike. Luckily, Mike's other big pissed off reaction (slapping the couch repeatedly) didn't come into play otherwise James would have ended up quite uncomfortable. -Finally, they make it past the second boss and reach what they think is the farthest they can go with the No Whip Challenge: the third stage where the hunchbacks and skeletons make their appearance. -Mike is actually pretty fond of challenges which I can attest when I look at some of the livestreams he did (he even played Super Mario Bros. 3 through without any coins though he admits that he prefers these simpler challenges like this No Whip challenge). -James actually gets a badass comment from Mike for beating the second screen which Mike thought was impossible...and even Mike cannot recreate it although coming close at one point. -Overall, this was actually better than I remembered. Perhaps it was mostly due to appreciating how much fun James & Mike have while doing this. Makes me certainly looking forward a bit more to rewatching those challenge videos.

I love reading books, especially Japanese fiction. Hopefully, this experience won't deter from it when James & Mike play The Pagemaster for the SNES: -For the first time in a long, long, long time, we get a guest on this show and it is none other than...MACAULEY CULKIN! So that gives you a timeframe for the episode back when James had seemingly a whole week of Macauley appearing in an AVGN episode, a Rental Reviews episode and perhaps some other stuff....and now he is here on James & Mike & Mack Mondays!
-This kind of makes me think about the really long stretch they now had of not having had any additional guest on the show compared to the early years where guest would drop by more often. Sure, I don't mind not having guys like JonTron and Doug Walker on here after all that's happened but not seeing guys like Kyle, Bootsy (for obvious reasons), Ryan etc. is certainly pretty notable. Kinda wondering why this Tony guy (who did Mike & Tony Tuesdays with Mike) didn't appear on this show (as far as I remember he didn't make any appearance until this show's end).
-I actually saw The Pagemaster once in the cinema but after that, never again. It wasn't a bad movie from what I remember but it didn't leave that much of an impression on me unlike the Home Alone movies. I saw the game being available for rental at my video store but I cannot remember if I ever rented it.
-Macauley is actually a pretty swell guest, shooting the breeze with James & Mike, talking about his days as a child star (how awesome it was working with stars like Patrick Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, the VA who voiced Roger Rabbit and Christopher Lloyd on the movie, how he never earned that much from his gigs doing commercials for Sprite for example [of which we see a clip of]) but also how he had a SNES and a Sega Genesis as a kid (playing the classics like Super Mario World, Pilotwings etc. but how he was much more into sports games like NBA Live etc.). Certainly makes me remember how awesome it is to have a guest from time to time join James & Mike.
-As for the game...it sucks as evidenced by them having trouble going through the first level even, getting killed left and right. Sure, they later find the shoes and the marbles which makes it better than the endurance run they played it as until now but it doesn't seem obvious where these essential items are to be found. Especially love their incredulousness at a tiny speck of beaker fluid being enough to kill you. Oh well, at least Mack has a good time with it.
-That Pagemaster game for the PC looks and sounds...interesting. Too bad Macauley didn't do the voice in that one.
-You can tell how fun the game is when all three of them are more interested in James trying to hit a fly with his electric bug zapper tennis racket which is really the highlight of the video. Too bad we do not hear or get a close-up of that sucker because it is always near them.
-Overall, a very fun episode mostly due to Macauley's presence being a really entertaining additon to the usual James & Mike silliness.

It is time again for another 2-for-1 special! First up, they still want more of that need for speed so it is only natural for James & Mike to play F-Zero: The Revenge for the SNES: -What we have here is a rarity: an F-Zero hack. And you can tell Mike is so happy about seeing a hack made of something different for once after all the Castlevania/Mega Man/Mario hacks in existence. -Oh my god, how James finishes the first race in the game! -Interesting question: Off the top of my head, I remember the green alien dude being named Pico...but I also couldn't tell you the name of the guy in the yellow car (whom I remember from the comics being a bit vain or proud of his heritage? He also had a II or III, indicating the Second or the Third, in his name). But did the cyborg announcer dude with the green hair in the comic ever have a name? -Where the heck did that taste test footage come from? Is it on Cinemassacre? And what did they eat? A slice of pizza with whipped cream? I guess they wanted to go into Michelangelo's taste realm of eating the grossest pizzas imaginable. -Admirable that they think a Legend Of Zelda movie made in the late 1980s/early 1990s could have been big...but looking at the SMB movie from 1993, I think it is better that we were spared from anything like that. -Woah, that Red Canyon II stage definitely looks like a stage from hell. Still glad that James is just happy later to have gone one lap on it (even if he had to downgrade from expert to beginner to do it). -Nice surreptitious advertising for McDonald's there, Mike. -Love James's confused expression when trying to figure out the right-turn jump in White Lands II. Also happy that he eventually did it. -10 F-Zero hacks? Ye gods! -To conclude, a decent video with them having fun with a hack while having some interesting topics for discussion. After getting hot and ready with racing, it is time to cool down and hack some ice when James & Mike play Ice Climber for the NES: -While I never played this game on the original NES, I have played it on the NES Classic several months ago and couldn't beat the first stage. -Yeah, Mike gets it out of the bag that the jumping takes some getting used to because it is unlike how you normally would jump in a game. For him, it is not a big problem but for James, it is totally frustrating to do. -What is it with games during that time featuring so many eggplants? Not that I mind since I find eggplants quite tasty but still. Also seeing that still from Adventure Island made me remember last week when I watched Mike's playthrough of the first Adventure Island and how he got stuck on the final stage for well over an hour with a bucking eggplant that he couldn't avoid. -Hmm, who knows, maybe the makers of Rick & Morty were inspired by S**tpickle for their Pickle Rick joke? The world may never know. -"Do you like corn, James?...That's when we know that we have run out of stuff to talk about." -That is something we didn't have too often on here: a difference of opinion with Mike liking the game while James not really feeling it due to the frustrating jumping. I can relate more to James because when I tried it, the jumping really annoyed me and didn't entice me to play the game more. -Overall, another decent quickie by them.

It almost feels like we are at the beginning again with these 2-for-1 posts becoming more frequent again.
First up, we cannot go any more classic than this when we finally hit the big kahuna by watching James & Mike play Super Mario Bros. for the NES: -But first, I can now definitely pinpoint late fall/early winter 2018 as the point where James finally got so embarrassed by his hair that he probably swore to always wear a cap during all non-AVGN episodes. For the past eight episodes, I have now seen him with a cap so I feel safe to say it. Have to admit that he would look weird with his head shaved (with some someone like Doug Walker it kinda fits better because somehow his face works better with a bald head) so I have nothing against him wearing a cap.
-Super Mario Bros....YAY! But it's a challenge video...BOO! Anyway, the challenge here is to do it backwards with no coins, i.e. you can only move forward by doing a backwards jump.
-Over the course of the video, James becomes frustrated with it (although it was his idea to begin with) while Mike actually likes this challenge...and he takes particular glee in wanting to do this as long as possible with James.
-I have to admit that after my first reservations, it is funny to watch them struggle with it and get frustrated while also seeing at least Mike having a lot of fun with it.
-Kinda wondering what that "flying over the flagpole" means and how Mike had the patience to try that for 3-4 hours.
-Well, Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren may not be fans of the Nerd, but it is good to hear that Ed Boon is a big fan and walked up to James at that convention. Perhaps James should have invited him for a Nerd episode sometime (or should invite him, I am sure there is still a bad Mortal Kombat game out there he could cover).
-They actually make it through the first level...but the second level already proves to be an impasse unfortunately.
-Overall, this was really more entertaining than I remember. Perhaps those challenge videos were not as bad as I thought.
The true challenges are the ones we make ourselves everyday...and that could be true as we continue watching James & Mike play Super Mario Bros. for the NES: -New challenge appears! This time, no collecting coins and no defeating enemies but you can move normally. Also, when they break one of the rules, it is not instant reset but rather handing the controller over to the other player. In the end, it gets counted how many times each player "died" on the stage to determine the winner.
-Dangit, James's father learned the hard way what a video game glitch is. I certainly can see how frustrating that would be.
-They actually both like this challenge better with James mostly being frustrated at the jumping in the previous vid's challenge. They also make it way farther than before.
-I do kinda wonder: perhaps as the last post in this thread or as a double post with the final video, I could do that Alien Storm video they talk about which is kinda the true originator of James & Mike Mondays in their opinion. It is up on YT (strangely enough in their Cinemassacre Plays channel rather than the main one) and I have not seen it before so it would be a neat coda to the whole thing. But that is still a bit away.
-Ah, that TMNT Tournament fighter vid with the bet that the loser had to watch the Turtle Tunes vid while the winner got to watch the last 10-15 minutes of the 1990 TMNT movie. Those were good times and I wonder (since that is a regular feature on UpUpDownDown) whether it would have changed J&MM very much if they did some type of bets from time to time.
-Yeah, Mike, stick to your Donald Duck impression because your Sylvester Stallone impression doesn't cut it.
-Also agree that Rope is really a stupid name for an enemy. Though it does seem to be the only really stupid name in Zelda. Mike certainly likes it more when enemies get special names like Koopas instead of just calling them turtles.
-All in all, another fun challenge video with lots of entertaining stuff they talk about. Those vids are really better than I remember.

Well, since Bootsy already beat it that time, the only thing left to do is getting a challenge out of it when James & Mike revisit Silver Surfer for the NES: -Something else I noticed in the past videos during that time is that they added a lots of bells and whistles to the vids like inserting clips, having icons and text appear on screen, doing extreme close-ups and slow-mos and also experimenting with the picture-in-picture set-up (I mentioned the one where the screens were curved for some reason; in this video, it is mirrored with James & Mike's screen now on the right side while the gameplay is seen on the right side). We shall see if they continue these experiments moving forward or if they simmer down after a while. I don't mind them but I could see others getting annoyed by them. -The challenge for Silver Surfer is here to not use any shots, i.e. to get as far into the level as possible without shooting any enemies or shooting in general. -The rubber ducky level is already impossible to get very far in so they abandon it pretty quickly. -Hmm, is there actually a Silver Surfer comic where he visits a haunted house? Maybe...and only the game creators know about that rare comic. -Yeah, I don't want to think too hard about paddling my way through a river of feces, thank you very much. -It does make you wonder if Silver Surfer would have gotten over if he behaved more like a stereotypical surfer (shredding, using "dude" a lot etc.). Perhaps he would have become an even more popular character? And why does Possessor have a bra on his face? Questions among questions.... -Yikes, hopefully the police never finds this video since James blatantly admits to murder in the last minute of the video. And all of it just because a friend of his played a prank on him with his paddles. -To conclude, another decent video. Nothing earthshattering but not too bad either.
