I really think this could have been a cool concept but it was just typically overly sanitised. The fight club stuff is a decent idea but the stupid corny music (that the women weren't even dancing in time with) and the same old camera work as usual really stopped it from being as good as it could be. Just make it dangerous. No cheesy music. Only one or two cameras at the most cos it's so intimidating no civilians want to be in there. I'm not saying it has to be an actual fight club blood bath but at least try and make it kinda gritty.
I think they kinda tried to make it gritty, what with the darkened room, the grey-brown tone of everything, the "this is in the back of a warehouse" setting with the boxes and shelving, and the ropeless ring.
I don't think that quite did the trick, but I'm not sure WWE quite knows how to not be production-perfect any more, not since everything went shiny sparkly clean HD with more LEDs than a lightbulb factory.
Should've definitely had fewer camera cuts, and probably fewer camera angles, yeah, and maybe just take the edge off the video quality a bit so it doesn't look quite as much like it's being shot with camera that cost multple tens of thousands of dollars.

The whole thing is stupid, but I'll give them some credit for actually bringing in some main roster people for some of the fights so it doesn't just seem like a bunch of random guys, and introducing Babatunde in an interesting way.
My main complaint has to be Hurt Business just going over there and putting it "under new management" after like 8 minutes of this thing being on TV and not really establishing a status quo to shake up.
Also if you're gonna go gritty very early UFC vibe with it, why not use the pit fight cage from that Thatcher vs Riddle match?

Yeah, I’d be fine with them introducing a new concept, as dumb as this one is, if they didn’t try and change things up night one without really explaining what the main point of Underground is. It’d be like if they introduced the Hardcore title for the first time, had a bunch of street fights to qualify for the title match and then had the champion say “I’m going to defend it in straightforward matches”. Like, we barely know what the title involves or what can be done with it and you’re already saying “Well, we’re changing the whole concept up!”

Yeah, definitely don't understand the Hurt Business stuff. Why would anybody care that they're "taking over" and bullying a bunch of no-name guys? Might as well just go beat up some random people on the street, it'd have the same complete lack of emotional weight for a viewer who hasn't had time or information to care about anything yet.
What did it actually do, besides dump on the whole WWE Underground concept? Now everybody there looks like they can't handle a fight too, which is bad if you're trying to put over an underground fight club, surely no matter how good Hurt Business are, a bunch of rough, gnarled underground fighters should be able to dismantle them for invading their turf and trying to show them up? Hadn't thought of this part until just replying to you now, it's a pretty important point I kinda overlooked. You could flip it around and say it's just that Hurt Business are that damn good, but it still means Underground can't bring the fight, so really, how tough are these "underground fighters"?

Yeah the setting is actually kinda cool but the "generic trap beat #46" looping in the background just kinda made it too "produced" rather than a rogue, unsanctioned thing. I didn't even mind the crystal clear quality camera but the natural noise in the silence would have made it a little more intense.

Turns out that the Brawl for All would be just as stupid if it were a work.

I imagine Shane feels just like Winona Ryder in Reality Bites when she sees how the hacks at the network have taken her work and edited it to hell.

I enjoyed it and thought it was different. If they're not going to be able to have crowds, I kind of like the idea of a few different "zones" forming within the performance center. Traditional stuff in the main PC arena, grudge matches in the Underground, etc. It could bring more depth to the show. We'll see how it plays out.

I kind of like the idea of a few different "zones" forming within the performance center. Lol, that's honestly why I used the word "zone," so I'm glad it resonated.

The whole Underground concept falls by having management. It SHOULD be "lawless land".If hurt business just got there and start wrecking people, claiming as their place, yeh it would work But they made it clear,it is a corporate idea,Shane owns it.

What's infuriating is that I'll even give WWE kudos for the set design. It looks like a place a seedy underground fight ring would be held. Very back room industrial look to it, lots of really dramatic lighting. Somebody was allowed to really make that space look visually unique, and then they managed to blow every shred of that with the camera work. It's like if an old '80s fantasy movie with gorgeous matte painted sets had the cinematography of a late-stages Bourne movie. There's the kernel of a good idea here and WWE still has so little sense of style to it that they completely blew through what could have made this good. They almost had somethiung, but to get grimy and simplistic with it simply isn't something they're willing to do so it loses all the edge it could have to instead become a hazy mess.
