First thing, basically a VTuber is a streamer using a virtual avatar. Sometimes 3d, or a live2d avatar.
One of the bigger VTuber agencies in Japan, hololive has recently started up an English branch, so might as well use that as a starting point by showcasing a couple of them for now. After that, I'll post other VTubers and note tidbits here and there.
So let's start off with Mori Calliope, one of hololive EN's VTubers out of five. Here's her rapping.
Next up, another from hololive EN. Gwar Gura, shark girl, playing a game where you're a shark.

I feel this could become a major thing if vtubers started making the avatar a cute kitten or silly dog.

I feel this could become a major thing if vtubers started making the avatar a cute kitten or silly dog. One of the more famous ones: Korone dresses like a dog. She also happens to be the favorite of my big bro who has been binge watching these things a ton since he was forced to work at home during the pandemic.

I feel this could become a major thing if vtubers started making the avatar a cute kitten or silly dog. There's two VTubers I've seen that uses an animal for an avatar. One is Virtual Gorilla, an independent virtual youtuber that true to his name, is a virtual gorilla. There's also Kuroi Shiba, who uses a dog for their avatar. One of the more famous ones: Karone dresses like a dog. She also happens to be the favorite of my big bro who has been binge watching these things a ton since he was forced to work at home during the pandemic. Funny coincidence. There's a VTuber named Korone, and her avatar is a dog girl. Here's a highlight of her being very excited about playing Doom 2016. She played Doom64 previously as a suggestion, and she also enjoyed that.

And yep that's her, every time I go near my bro's room I hear her upbeat squeaky voice from within.

Part of it is her general enthusiasm, and she does have a habit of playing older games (such as Monster Rancher 2 and Metal Slug) and some games that haven't really been played by other VTubers, like Blasphemous. Speaking of VTubers with an animal theme to them, we go from dog to a rabbit. Usada Pekora from the same VTuber agency as Korone. Here's her playing MGS3 (the first of the series she played, and she went on to play 1, 2, then 4) Some comments have noted that her skill with the game is similar to one DSP, though at the very least her enthusiasm for the game and plot at least makes it an enjoyable experience in a more traditional sense.

I`m not a big followers but sometimes I watch recommended videos of scenes,I see the appeal, they all have fun personalities. Plus, they are "idols" without all the exploitation part,so that is a plus

Just today she streamed Super Mario Bros with the caveat that she would only speak English and if she spoke one word of Japanese she would end the stream...she made to the 40 min mark before she cracked.

Plus, they are "idols" without all the exploitation part,so that is a plus Sorta. Out of the two most well known VTuber agencies, hololive and Nijisanji, the former does try to market their VTubers as "idols"... with mixed results consider some of the members. There's another agency, .LIVE, that has the marketing as well. In any case, unfortunately, the more toxic parts of the fandom rears its ugly head from time to time. One of these days, I'll probably mention it more. In any case, for most part I've posted hololive stuff, with only one from Nijisanji, so let's fix that up. Shellin Burgundy, one of the male Nijisanji VTubers, going from 0 to 100 in Fall Guys Ange Katrina, and a complete breakdown during a play of Getting Over It. Project Winter. A game where the players are survivors trying to escape a snowy mountain, but there's traitors among the group who'll try to kill the other players. Here's Chaika, who decides to be a load to everyone in the best way possible.

Random tidbit: it's frowned upon to reference any VTubers previous streaming career before their current gig, more or less. A lot of them want their privacy and they certainly don't want to be doxxed and harassed, so don't go to a livestream chat and do something along the lines of "hey, he/she was X before being Y". Seriously, don't do it.
Anyways, here we have a before and after video of some of the hololivers, before being how they were during their debut, and after being much later after that.

Which makes it hella weird that some mega popular “face streamers“(I’ve seen this term come up a lot recently in VTuber circles to differentiate the streamers who show their physical face) are trying to be VTubers too, with the biggest example currently being Pokimane, who straight up announced it out in the open. So now there’s this weird somewhat schism forming the fanbase between whether anyone can be a VTuber, even if they are super popular(I think even Xavier Woods is getting interested in it ever since he heard about it a couple days ago), or if it should be kept “pure” by the VTubers only being anonymous.

It's a weird situation, and unfortunately it has caused a lot of toxic elements to spring out from the community. Lots of gatekeeping and doom and gloom. Way I see it, if the VTuber wants their anonymity, then they have all the right to keep it. If they don't, then that should be respected as well. As for becoming a VTuber if they were popular before... well, why not? Like, quite a good number of VTubers prior to becoming their current well known role started off as a streamer with some amount of popularity. Hell, some artists... can't really say who since they're well known for drawing hentai, have begun some Vtubing. Heck, just recently the debuts of hololivers immediately gave you popularity and a big audience even before the first video.

I`m not a big followers but sometimes I watch recommended videos of scenes,I see the appeal, they all have fun personalities. Plus, they are "idols" without all the exploitation part,so that is a plus Some of the Vtubers are actually backed by Idol producers as far as I understand, so I wouldn't really count that out. Personally, I kind of am weirded out by this stuff. I see a fanbase that has a heavy presence of the same kind of dudes that obsessed over those idol singers, but now growing attached to something that isn't even a real person, just a cartoon basically (since they are, in general, into the "character" being put on, not the person behind it). It's unnerving, and I also feel like the business might be a little predatory in that, those are also the people Vtubers have to target for demographics, since they will be donating the most money. Like, I get why people might like it, but I find the already rapidly growing toxicity in these communities, and the fact that there are already Vtuber "agencies" and promoters, to be a worrying sign of where this is going.

It's kinda of like wrestling. There's a certain amount of kayfabe going on. Of course, there are bad practices and stories of mismanagement... like I recall one VTuber whose hasn't been getting paid by the management they was under in. More or less kept her in hiatus for like a year, but they did managed to lawyer up and get the rights to the character and stream as an independent. That's more or less the gist of it, and of course I've heard some other stuff regarding other places. And VTuber "agencies" has been a thing since the start. Kizuna AI, the one who started this VTuber trend is under one, for example. And not every VTuber is an idol; good deal of them just plays video games for most part. As for toxic communities, that's been there from the start, in all sorts of mediums of entertainment. Sucks that they're there and can ruin the fun, but they don't represent everyone. In the end, this is really no different from internet entertainment. Let's Plays, chatting with people, singing music and other forms of entertainment. You just add a virtual avatar on top of that.

Here we have highlights of hololive's Oozora Subaru playing Undertale. Specifically the final fight in the genocide route where it took her three stream sessions which was about a total of 15 hours and over 100 attempts.
