It was awesome, but I never got why this game in particular is the one that gets singled out as the GOAT. All the games from what was essentially that "series" we're great. WCW vs NWO World Tour, WCW/NWO Revenge, Wrestlemania 2000, all awesome.

I put Revenge slightly ahead of it because it didn't have the save deleting bug, but I loved updating the roster.

WCW vs NWO World Tour, WCW/NWO Revenge, Wrestlemania 2000, all awesome. Generally, the discussion moves on from last year's game to the next year's game. With NM being the last of the chain, there fandom didn't move on from it quite like they did for earlier AKI games. Also, it is the most mode & feature heavy entry with the most fleshed out CAW (at least for the american releases) & has been the focus of the modding scene precisely because it's the most recent & feature rich. But even with just the vanilla game, you got 1 of the best rosters of any wrestling with so many stars at the peak of their careers. This is peak Rock, peak Austin, Peak Kane, arguably peak HHH, Chris Jericho, Kurt Angle, Mick Foley, peak Rikishi. We got the Dudleys, the Radicalz, APA, the Hardyz had come into their own at this point (as opposed to WM2000 & their shitty old theme), Edge/Christian. This represents the Attitude Era at its best.

Each game significantly improved over the prior one, culminating in No Mercy. No Mercy added ladder matches, a bigger roster, way more detailed CAW, way more unlockables, an actual story mode instead of just a linear career among other things. The only knock on No Mercy is the save glitch the first run of games had I mean, all of them are still insanely playable (I actually might play Revenge the most) but there is definitely major progression in quality as the series goes on with No Mercy being the pinnacle.

I always get WM2000 and No Mercy switched around in my head. I just know the best one was when you were 30+ deep into the Rumble, Ho would run out and bitchslap your candy ass backflippin' right out of the ring.

Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 is the best of that family of games.
Create a mask mode
MMA fighting positions and rules
Super finishers mechanic
But No Mercy is a close runner up and obviously far more accessible in the US

The only way to get a half passable Rey was Undertaker's Phantom mask plus shaved white hair.

I dread to think the amount of hours I've spent playing this game (and all the other THQ ones). Well worth it though!

Playing thought all the hours buying everything then the Hoe then having your content erased WTF!!!!!!!!! Yeah that glitch is why I can't call No Mercy the best wrestling game ever made (at least in america) having all of your shit erased is friggen soul crushing that said it's a super fun game but there are a lot of cracks that you start realizing from playing it as much as I have... the glitch being the first... but super heavyweights are completely useless in the game is another.

I think the most fascinating thing to me with No Mercy is the modding scene. The modders have gotten really creative in recreating modern sets and wrestlers for all sorts of promotions, among other things. There's something to be said about that sort of lasting power.
