Bleh. Wanted him to be a babyface and I'm not feeling the Team Taz thing at all. I'm sure they'll book it well and it'll be good for him in the long run, just not a direction I'm interested in. This for me. This guy's actual story is real life babyface greatness. I wanted to cheer this man. Although I admire how well it was done, I admire the lack of predictability, I think it will be well-executed and I think I will probably enjoy it... it just ain't what I wanted. Also I feel like Hobbs should have turned on Darby, not Cody. I think that the idea is that a face turn later on would be bigger, and on that front, I can agree. The minor fall and the major lift, that kinda thing. That said, even with the sympathetic backstory, I think they can still definitely work with that as heel. Like, if nothing else, it could explain an urgency where he wants to be a big deal now, rather than later. Dude's still at around 50/50 with his record and could be frustrated with his progress.

They absolutely can and will make it work. Almost nothing in AEW has straight-up not worked. And Hobbs seems like he's great. I just. Wanted to cheer for this particular babyface.

I’m cool with this.
The one thing I’ve thought about Team Taz is that they need someone that can bridge the gap between Starks and Cage. Cage is a charisma vacuum. And Starks does not come off as imposing. So I’ve thought for a while they need someone who can talk the talk and walk the walk. Have no clue how Hobbs mic skills are but this could be a golden opportunity for him.

Hobbs squashing Johnson was great, also as a heel he already showed more charisma than Cage.

I kinda like the name change since Will "Power" Hobbs is way more of a face name. Powerhouse Hobbs works for me, and for those saying we'd shit on it if WWE did it, eh, I don't necessarily agree. Bad News Barrett got plenty of love and was an improvement over Wade.
The attire is definitely a marked improvement. Singlet helps him stand out a bit since not a ton of guys have them in the company, and of those, Colt's is a totally different style. The black towel as both a Mike Tyson and Taz throwback is also nice.

Hobbs has such an amazing face story, but my god he can make himself look like such a scumbag that I can see why they are giving him a heel run
He also makes a singlet work.

So did they go WWE here, changing his name from Will Hobbs to Powerhouse Hobbs?

So did they go WWE here, changing his name from Will Hobbs to Powerhouse Hobbs? Taz changed it. He said it was a "Group effort" but Taz is basically wanting to put his own stamp and twist on Hobbs to make him different Will "Power" Hobbs is his face name, "Powerhouse" Hobbs sounds more heelish

So did they go WWE here, changing his name from Will Hobbs to Powerhouse Hobbs? To go WWE they need to remove his first name from existence Introducing: Hobbs. Dude is still called Will Hobbs in promos, in his singlet, etc but Powerhouse Hobbs is his ringname.

I'd like to think that the real reason they changed it is to stop JR calling him Willie Hobbs

Powerhouse Hobbs is a classic marquee fighter name. Completely fine with it

Someone getting a new character/alignment and receiving a new nickname to match isn't 'pulling a WWE' it's just advancing the presentation of a wrestler. When someone in WWE gets their name dropped it's usually without any driving character reason, one week they're simply coming out with only one name and never, under punishment of death, being referred to by that other name again.

Hobbs has such an amazing face story, but my god he can make himself look like such a scumbag that I can see why they are giving him a heel run He also makes a singlet work. His backstory is very sympathetic, but I can honestly see how it could feed into the heel turn, rather than contradict. His brother died saving him, so he becomes a wrestler. Maybe he isn't willing to just wait and hope for things to work out for him, so he decides that, given both Ricky and Cage have beaten him before, they and Taz can make his dream happen for him that much sooner.

They should have Hobbs say that he wants to avenge his previous humillations(like getting squashed by OC and Scorpio Sky pre All Out).

A sneer like that is wasted on a good guy. Not gonna lie that's a fatastic expression just to sell how much of an asshole you just were and you do NOT care. My personal head canon is that one day Tony Kahn saw him making that face backstage and IMMEDIATELY decided he was going to be a heel now

I meant that Powerhouse Hobbs sounds more like Demon Kane or Reverend Devon or Shorty G (though not as goofy) than the whole dropping of the first name thing which is another issue altogether. It’s dropping half of their name and adding a descriptor in its place.

It’s dropping half of their name and adding a descriptor in its place. Bad News Barrett, Bad News Allen/Brown, Brickhouse Brown, Hardbody Harrison (not someone you'd want to emulate, but still), etc. It's a pretty tried and true format for names that has about as many hits as it does misses.
