I meant that Powerhouse Hobbs sounds more like Demon Kane or Reverend Devon or Shorty G (though not as goofy) than the whole dropping of the first name thing which is another issue altogether. It’s dropping half of their name and adding a descriptor in its place. Bad News Barrett, Bad News Allen/Brown, Brickhouse Brown, Hardbody Harrison (not someone you'd want to emulate, but still), etc. It's a pretty tried and true format for names that has about as many hits as it does misses. Hulk Hogan. Need I say more?

I mean, at least this name change is something they’ve done on TV as his new manager putting his stamps of approval on the guy, and not just “DON’T SAY THIS PART OF HIS NAME EVER AGAIN”.

Pulling a WWE would be erasing his first name from existence and just going by "Hobbs."

Someone getting a new character/alignment and receiving a new nickname to match isn't 'pulling a WWE' it's just advancing the presentation of a wrestler. When someone in WWE gets their name dropped it's usually without any driving character reason, one week they're simply coming out with only one name and never, under punishment of death, being referred to by that other name again. I mean, at least this name change is something they’ve done on TV as his new manager putting his stamps of approval on the guy, and not just “DON’T SAY THIS PART OF HIS NAME EVER AGAIN”. Yeah this isn't one week they are calling him Antonio, or Matt, or Mustafa, or Alexander. and then the next they act like they've never had a first name including scrubbing their entire web history of it... it's a character based change... as stated like going from Wade Barrett to Bad News Barrett.

And by accounts, they still call him Will on commentary so it’s not like he never was Will Hobbs, just that now he’s added another level his game, hence the Powerhouse part.

Hulk Hogan. Need I say more? He was Hulk Hogan first, I was talking about dropping the first name and replacing it. It would be more like when the Hulk was dropped and he was called Hollywood Hogan although they sometimes said Hollywood Hulk Hogan. Barrett is a good example. I only remember Bad News Brown as having that name in WWF I don’t remember him having a first name that was dropped.

Maybe I missed a thread, or maybe this thread is meant to only be about Hobbs, but am I the only one who has been kind of pretending the Team Taz thing was working for weeks when it was mostly 'several good things knocking together that aren't a coherent whole' and then in the past couple of weeks it's become the f***ing bomb?
That segment with Taz. It's funny that we were just talking about the Cena shoot era on the WWE forum, because I thought that is how you do a worked shoot segment. Cutting the mics, cutting the mics, and they don't want to send security out to get this sad little old man, so Cody's like c'mon Taz, and then TAZ ACTUALLY HIT THE TAZMISSION.
I don't know if anybody else marked out like f*** for that getting slapped on, but I know I did. And Taz's 'you crossed a line' thing about Cody saying that shit about Taz's kid.
Honestly, I am here for this angle now. The only problem for me is that I suddenly hate Darby Allin and want to see him get murdered by Team Taz.

Honestly, I am here for this angle now. The only problem for me is that I suddenly hate Darby Allin and want to see him get murdered by Team Taz. Like, when I first read “Taz hits Cody with the tazmission” I thought it’d look super hokey and weird because Taz can’t go on his back like before but seeing it in action, it made Taz out to be dangerous because dude still knows how to lock that thing in and if security didn’t come down, he might have had it fully in and Cody might be f***ed. It doesn’t take away from anyone else in Team Taz because it more says “This guy knows what he’s talking about because he’s still dangerous and he’s teaching three other dangerous guys”. And yeah, his comments didn’t put me off because he’s been in other companies that, in kayfabe, have had really elaborate managerial systems so he has a right to be like “I’m here now and I’m not going to let that happen again”. Dude survived TNA during the Hogan era. He has a right to be bitter.

It’s dropping half of their name and adding a descriptor in its place. Gorgeous George and Strangler Lewis are happy takes like this didn't exist when they were plying their trade. Powerhouse is a legitimate wrestling name, and please don't compare it with failed WWE gimmicks. But ok, Shorty is an insult, is Powerhouse an insult? Reverand is a dumb gimmick with religious overtones, Powerhouse indicates he is a strong guy. Demon indicates a supernatural religious toned character, Powerhouse indicates that he is strong. I mean, professional wrestling with nicknames is like ancient. Plato was the philosopher's wrestling name and actually meant Broad, and was given to him by Artistotle. This is like a 2500 year old concept, so please don't compare it to your least favorite WWE nicknames.

So couple of things going entirely off of last night.
1 - Hobbs seems way more interesting as a heel than he ever was as a face, he works well with that kind of villainous swagger added to the way he carries himself.
2 - I feel like heel Hobbs has rendered Cage entirely pointless.

Overlooking the potential of Hobbs and Cage throwing dudes into orbit as a team is something to reconsider
