When I worked at Blockbuster, Every week, Every Friday, no matter HOW good or bad a big new release was, we could ALWAYS count on it being almost or completely rented out all weekend. Even the Love Guru. Even Meet the Spartans. It didn't matter what it was. If it was new and it went to theaters and we had a lot of it, it was gone. And for the same reason, we would sell even used copies of the movie at full price for the first month or so after it came out. But we had one glaring exception. When The Final Destination came out, we got the usual 200 copies, expect and that like literally everything else it would rent out the first weekend or two, then we could start selling things off and shrink our inventory. Well the first weekend comes by, and we rent out of all our new releases. Except for The Final Destination. We never had more than 30 or 40 rented out at one time. That Monday my manager pulls like 80% of our inventory of the movie to be sold off for the used price of $14.99, which was about $10 cheaper than a brand new copy. It was the only time that happened, and to this day in not quite sure why that particular movie got such a negative reception.
I worked there only a few months before I quit. Turned out to be for the best as a few months later, I was diagnosed with MS so with the rigors of the job, I would have had to quit anyway.
I LOVED working there. got to hang out with my friends who also worked there shooting the shit about movies and games (which I got a big discount on, plus free rentals). that said it's probably for the best it went out of business because if it didn't I'd probably still be there and living with my parents.
