Returns for me.
Recently re-watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it.
This Superman is all about saving people and the greater good in the face of insurmountable odds.
Man of Steel Superman has dad and space-dad issues.

Man Of Steel was a better movie.
Superman Returns was the first time I actually thought my childhood hero was sexy.
Both have their merits.

Both have some good and a lot of bad. Returns has only 2 real good action scenes IMO, but then half of Man of Steels just look like watching a video game. Returns understands the idea of Superman but goes too far into daddy issues. Man of Steel and Zach Snyder as we are well aware have no clue what Superman is about.
I'll just choose neither and watch the good clips on Youtube. Then watch my DVDs of Superman the Animated Series some more. Best interpretation of Superman since the Fleishers, and possibly best of all (Reeve being hampered by the time period).

If anything Returns is more disappointing because Routh is a great Superman&then they give him almost nothing to do.
Was glad he got an opportunity to play him again on CW. That was a double edged sword though as the network then got rid of both he and his wife cuz the writers didn't have any ideas for their characters.

They're actually quite alike. Both have a lead who COULD be a great Superman if not tied down to a certain type.

For Superman Returns I’ll take the opening sequence with the plane, the bullet hitting his eye and Luther shouting WRONG and leave the rest.
For Man of Steel I’ll take basically just the earth action sequences. The Krypton stuff is awful, all the young Clark stuff is awful except for the “You are my son” bit.
Casting in both movies is pretty good except for Kate Bosworth in Returns. Edge to Man of Steel.
I honestly wouldn’t sit down to watch either though.

I’d sit down to watch either sincerely before Batman vs, Superman, at least if I’m not roasting it with someone.
I’ve seen movies I thought were bad or boring for whatever reason, and it’s like whatever. But that was one of the rare times I felt myself getting legit annoyed, both by how convoluted the story was and how hyper serious and self important everything came off.
Also I agree with the Superman TAS love.

Poor Bosworth was just miscast as Lois which was even more glaring as Parker Posey was right there.

I was scratching my head as to why HBO Max didn't have Superman Returns on its service, and then I remembered who played Lex Luthor in that film and it all made sense. Not sure that’s why. They’ve got Harvey Weinstein films on there after all. As for the topic at hand, Superman Returns is flawed but as has been said, it does have some good set-pieces. Man of Steel was your typical Snyder film, all style, no substance.

I also assume Weinstein is out of the picture financially at this point, since the company was sold off. But it’s probably just a pre-existing streaming rights issue, I’d guess.

I haven't seen SR in full, so I can't really say much about it. But I found MOS so goddamn boring, which is saying something considering a good half of that movie is a big CGI fist fight. Which might have been exciting if it seemed like either guy had the ability to actually hurt the other during it. It was like a lot of the filler fights you'd see in DBZ, but padding out a way too long movie instead.
So my vote is I've still yet to see a good Superman movie.

The first Reeve movie is perfect for that era of Superman.
They've never really reached those heights since, though II approaches it.
