Got into a discussion about this with a friend on looking over what all HBO Max offers (which doesn't actually include Superman Returns).
I've not seen either since they were in theaters, but I feel like I'd have more tolerance for Superman Returns if I were to revisit them... though on the other hand Returns is the longer one of the two.

Man of Steel, massive flaws and all, at least isn't mostly boring.
There are things that I like about Returns, but it is a slog to get through.

Superman Returns, easily
It's a flawed movie, but it has enough for me to consider it a good movie.
I really liked Brandon Routh as Superman.

Easily Returns for me...
it is not a great movie by any means.
But there's just so much wrong with MoS from just a technical level up.
I don't remember any characters acting completely against their own motivations or invalidating their entire premise in the opening, in Returns.

I enjoyed Man of Steel a bit more on my second watch, so I’ll pick that one. Also I think if they had cut 20-30 minutes out of the third act it would flow a lot better. That end fight scene just goes on way too long. Pretty much how I feel about BvS too, cut out the unneeded Doomsday fight and it would be a better movie, in my opinion.

I give the slight nod to Superman Returns. It was boring as hell, but at least it seemed to understand the character on some level.

Returns tries to capture the sense of wonder and positivity all Superman stories should have. It mostly fails, but it's still more than Man of Steel, which beats us over the head with "being Superman is a miserable, soul-crushing burden."

Henry Cavil and Amy Adams are far more interesting to watch as Clark and Lois than Routh and Kate Bosworth were. Kevin Spacey is now not as much fun to watch and Lex and I think Michael Shannon is awesome as Zod. Returns is just so damn boring. I can tolerate a bad movie, but I cannot abide by a boring movie.

I stared at those two options for a minute.
There’s aspects of Superman Returns I liked. But it was just so boring and the soft-“period-piece” element didn’t work. Especially during the first watch, MOS was a breath of fresh air.

That's a good point. Everything else being equal, MoS had much better casting than Superman Returns. With the baffling exception of BvS's Lex Luthor, casting has always been a strength for Zack Snyder.

Superman Returns feels more optimistic and in tune with the expected Superman sentiments. Routh in the Clark Kent disguise especially was good. But it’s slow and suffers from a lack of action, and is really trying to follow up the Donner films.
MoS has the action and adrenaline rushes I wanted from Returns, and it has its fair share of cool moments/visuals. Cavill I thought stood out while having the suit on , he gives Superman a good air of approachability and decency. But there’s also some weird character decisions that fall flat, and it feels too melancholy for its own good in spots.
Really, IMO Superman 78 and Superman II are still the movies that find the happy medium of telling an overall serious Superman story while also having the right amounts of action and humor. Lowkey they’re the parents of the whole comic book film genre.

Lowkey they’re the parents of the whole comic book film genre. I feel like there's a pretty clear progression in terms of the superhero movie genre's growth; you can pretty much chart it out to Superman laying the groundwork for the general idea, Batman refining the presentation, X-Men laying the groundwork for a lot of the expected aesthetics and plot structural choices, and then Iron Man starting a trend toward not being embarrassed by the source material.

That one I think was where you could point to these movies not just being judged as good comic book movies, but as good movies period.

I'll go with Man of Steel. It's not a great movie, but Superman Returns is so bland and felt more like a fanfiction to the Donner films than its own standalone movie.
Brandon Routh at least got to have justice for his Superman in Crisis On Infinite Earths.

I was scratching my head as to why HBO Max didn't have Superman Returns on its service, and then I remembered who played Lex Luthor in that film and it all made sense.
