If they haven't given you an answer then you should assume the answer is "No" until further notice. And I still think that's a cop-out. I'm just going to leave because I'm not in the best mood right now and this thing isn't helping.

Also, the boomer talk is dumb. I don't know where what I said implied that nobody aged above the age of 60 can use a computer. Christ. No, you didn't say that. But someone else did allege that this person was fired by boomers who hate the Internet. And then you responded that by looking at their mostly old, white, board of directors, that this theory was safe to assume. Which, the fact that you felt the need to unnecessarily point out their skin color when it's irrelevant to the situation was kinda racist in itself, but let's not even open that can of worms.

The more I think about it, this seems like a complete stunt by the TikTok guy. He knew exactly what he was doing, he never really expected to talk to the VP of marketing, he knew he’d likely end up shit canned. His story about getting fired has gone viral, he’s already set up a GoFundMe to find new videos. Dude’s a hustler

Yeah, he kind of loses me for doing it anyway despite not yet getting an answer. I can't think of many places where that isn't at the very least a warning.
Still, at least he thought he was trying to be helpful. It seems everytime I log into Instagram there's a posted reel of someone in full uniform trying to be funny, often mocking customers.

I'm usually the "Unchecked capitalism is a disease" guy, but making Tiktok videos on the clock without explicit permission isn't a good optic.

Almost every job I've had has had an explicit rule written in the employee handbook that you're not allowed to have a phone on your person while at work, or on the main floor. Wouldn't be surprised if this was the case at Sherwin-Williams. And if the biggest paint maker was looking to expand it's social media presence for some reason, they're probably looking on LinkedIn to hire somebody, not wondering what a part timer at one of their stores is thinking. None of that is how business works.

None of that is how business works. I mean, most companies would prefer going internally for these things if they show the knowledge then searching for someone to bring in and spend time interviewing them and getting them all up to date with company ethos. NOW I’m done with this thread.

I’m going to presume this company has a code of conduct. Within this code I’m fairly certain, as said by many previous posters, that there is a rule prohibiting cell phone use on company time. As for “The company should’ve told him” most companies give a copy of their rules and regulations upon being hired. The employee in that case could not plead ignorance.
As far as using his phone on the clock, that in and of itself is stealing company time. He has a job to do. Making TikTok videos is not in his job description. Do that shit on your own time.
“He reached out to marketing for permission”. He has a direct supervisor to ask. If they don’t say yes or no, that doesn’t give you the right to do it anyway. Use some common sense.
As for the videos being filmed on company property, this can be seen as him representing the company on their behalf. Lots of companies now (mine included) have social media policies regarding representation online. If he’s doing these videos without permission, he’s representing the company falsely. Regardless of content, that is more than enough nowadays to get you shitcanned.
Tl;dr He got what he deserved. No sympy.

I was working in a morgue when cellphones with cameras first became a thing. There was a STRICT rule about once you got to work your cell was locked in your locker. If you went on break, and left the building,or went out for lunch you could get your phone. But the rest of your shift it was locked up.
Haven't worked at the morgue in 13 years now. But talking to my old boss the rule is still there. If they caught you with your phone inside the building it was a write up. If you got caught taking pictures or video,You were fired.

I completely understand why he got fired, but still thinks it’s dumb? I think I can be both. I get policies and yadayada, but I think a lot of work cultures are way too f***ing uptight. I dunno. Surprised people are that upset at the guy. He did a dumb thing, but also i don’t think what he did is that big a deal.

NOW I’m done with this thread. They actually don't. If a company wants to do something new, they usually hire people who have expertise doing that sort of thing before. If there is a higher up in the company that wants the job, they can certainly put their name in the hat. But a big company like that does not give a shit what an hourly employee at one of their stores thinks or if they are qualified for said job. And if they really for whatever reason want to hire internally, they will put up an internal job posting for current employees. Usually when a nobody employee has an idea like this it goes in the Suggestion Box aka the trash can.

While working at Panera Bread, my boss told me a story of how someone put out a TikTok video about how the Mac and Cheese is made and stored. Corporate was really pissed because they don't like customers having a full view of the back of the store. So they fired them.
That's the policy everywhere. You can't post social media involving parts of a store where customers aren't allowed.

These companies always seem too quick to fire somebody, seems more of a formal warning offence. Although admittedly I reluctantly get it if it is a security/trade secret kind of risk.

We don't know if he had other write-ups or discipline issues. With that said, both posting videos during company time and shooting inside the facility without permission seem like the type of thing where the company might just cut it's losses. I'm working form home right now and it's slow as shit during the holiday week. Even so, were I to start posting "OMG SO BOOOORRREEEEDDDDD" on Facebook or something, I imagine there'd be some consequences.

I'm aware I'm a stickler for rules but if he asked and they didn't agree to it then he should have stopped. I'm sorry for him and I think he had good intentions but he can't claim ignorance here when he knew they hadn't said yes and did it anyway. That's a no-no in any job.
I can't email my boss, ask for tomorrow off then take tomorrow off because they didn't respond to me. It doesn't work that way in a workplace.

They really aren't too quick to fire people though. I've got over a decade of retail experience including management. It is almost impossible to fire somebody once you've hired them. They have to REALLY f*** up majorly to get fired. If you fire someone without good cause, they can try to sue you. Also, hiring and training new people is a pain in the ass.

With the popularity of his videos I'm sure he'll have a Stroke of luck eventually. Hopefully he finds a new, stable career and doesn't end up working as a male Stripper. If he does end up a Stripper, hopefully his friends don't find out, because doing that kind of work can really Varnish your reputation.
