Thought that he deserves his own thread rather than part of the football thread.
He was IMO the greatest footballer ever. The reasoning he is in this slot above the likes of Pele is because if ever a player single-handedly (no pun intended) won the World Cup ,it was Maradona in 1986. Without Pele in the side, Brazil still would’ve won on any of those occasions. Maradona dragged an average Argentina side to the biggest prize in sport.
Only Maradona could have scored one of the most outrageous examples of cheating and one of the most outrageous examples of pure football skill in the same game. He was troubled, he was not a pleasant person. But f***ing hell, he could play. RIP

He was a bit before my time, and by the time I really knew about him his reputation as a troublemaker preceded him somewhat. Eventually he earned this weird contrasting status as both an absolute icon of the game and mythical figure, but who you also couldn't mention without talking about his personal life.
All things considered, although he died young he was probably lucky to last as long as he did, and the twenty years of boozing and pies and naughty salt probably should've finished him off a while ago. Nevertheless, he joins the likes of Garrincha, Georgie Best, and dare I say Paul Gascoigne in the ranks of troubled geniuses in the world of football.

I wanted to kill him in 1986. But that aside, along with Pele he was the greatest footballer of all time. Flawed, yes, a crazy m*********, of course, but still a genius and an icon and legend.
RIP Diego.

He was someone where even if you knew nothing about Association Football, you still knew who he was. He was that big.

Always feel there's a what if element to Pele's career which was spent almost entirely in South America. Diego proved himself across the world at the highest level.

Was just getting into football as he was in his decline. I have vague memories of USA 94 and his goal in that tournament but also him being sent home. Obviously in England he isn’t exactly our favourite person but as a footballer there was barely anyone better. I would have liked to have seen him in his prime but I was too young. RIP.

RIP Maradona. As a kid I used to think Argentina and Maradona were two different players.

He had ups and downs for sure, a really flawed guy but there was something about his time with Napoli and how much he still means to them (they’re going to rename their stadium after him as we speak) that’s one of those things that makes sports sports.
It’s tragic he went out in circumstances that weren’t his fault, which makes things worse considering by all accounts, he was getting healthier and better.
And while I’m here, and I won’t go into it; F*** Peter Shelton. F***ing time and place, dude.

I always flip-flop between being furious at the Hand of God and impressed by the sheer balls of it. RIP to the GOAT.

From what I’ve heard, the circumstances were entirely his fault and he probably wouldn’t have changed a thing. He loved drinking and drugs and lived his life at a 100mph. He’d dodged the Reaper on a few occasions but eventually he caught up with him. As for Shilton, in the last few years he’s shown that he’s not a particularly nice guy, so his recent comments are no surprise.

Shows me right to following impulsive tweets. In that case, it’s...well, about what you said. And yeah, Shilton’s shown himself a few times recently but it was one line I thought he wouldn’t cross. Guess I was wrong.

Flawed Genius, absolutely one of the best ever with a football at his feet, just phenomenal. The Hand of God tarnishes it a bit and he certainly didn't hold back with the crazy lifestyle.
Although I mainly remember him running up to the camera in 1994 world cup like an insane madman after scoring a goal. Next day he is sent home for drug taking.
Amazing player RIP
