They were upper middle-cass. George was a sportswriter and later a sportscaster and his wife eventually became a lawyer. They both worked, they needed some help around the house, there's your Mr Belvedere.

I love how its an obligation to bring this up any time anyone mentions the show I was listening to someone who I’m forgetting now on Gilbert Gottfried’s podcast, apparently they felt the need to announce this on the studio lot once it happened. |

Belvedere was involved in a car accident with Eucker and was judged to be at fault. The judge decreed that Belvedere, having no insurance, be sentenced to be Eucker’s butler.
