Which one do you prefer? I'd have to say Garfield by a mile. For all his laziness and snark, Garfield does have a good heart overall, while Heathcliff is pretty much an emotionless bully (this goes for the strip and the cartoon for both).

They're both pretty good representation of cats. Garfield being the manipulative but ultimately loyal kind, and Heathcliff being the backalley cat that's probably got a ton of children.
I go Garfield but in a fight Heathcliff goes over in a squash (unless Garfield's at his smartest).

We already went over this in Cat Court. Garfield would win but then he has a heart attack, and gets shot.

I literally learned to read with Garfield. Its peak is higher than Heathcliff's peak.
I do appreciate Heathcliff settling down into a new comfortable wheelhouse of surrealism, though.

If we're talking strictly television presence, Heathcliff was ever so slightly before my time, whereas Garfield and Friends dominated my childhood. So I definitely have a more passing familiarity with Garfield and that's probably who I'd go with here.

Heathcliff did have the better theme song to his cartoon. Plus, the Cadillac Cats.

Heathcliff did have the better theme song to his cartoon. Plus, the Cadillac Cats. But seriously, in popular media, Garfield seems to have more staying power despite the Heathcliff show back in the day. More specials, more movies, more merch. In that regard, Garfield wins in a landslide.

Garfield and Friends was a household tradition for me growing up, so him by default. I didn’t mind sitting through the odd Heathcliff episode, but mainly because I thought the Catillac Cats were funny.

Garfield by a landslide.
Heathcliff isn't overexposed and it's honestly been years since I've taken another look at his cartoons.

Garfield easily. Loved his supporting characters more, loved his attitude more and despite having no Cleo, US Acres was also much funnier.
Speaking of Heathcliff, I am wondering how many people nowadays would be gobsmacked like I was a few years ago when asking them: "Do you remember the other Heathcliff cartoon?"
