He had been cast for SNL and was supposed to be in Ghostbusters. So yes.

I've seen a few of his pieces in the National Gallery of Art, I hope talent like that would win out regardless.

I can see Rubens being part of SNL.
Likely taking up where someone like Billy Crystal or Martin Short left off. A guy that plays over-the-top characters that would still be quoted to this day.

He hit cast for SNL abs was supposed to be in Ghostbusters. So yes. What was supposed to be his role in Ghostbusters? In the OG script Gozer was going to appear as a man in a suit and tie who the heroes mistake as the leader of the cult that summoned it. Reubens was cast for the part and there are some storyboard sketches that show Gozer as looking like him. But he had scheduling conflicts and dropped out, so a Serbian model, Slavitsa Jovian, got the part instead.

He'd have had a career like his friend, the late Phil Hartmann, well known, successful but mostly TV work and voice acting, but never unemployed for long as he's a talented guy.

Absolutely he would have. He's been in the Groundings & easily could have been in SNL. Remember he had a small part in "The Blues Brothers" so it is probable Aykroyd would have thought of him "Ghostbusters".
