Funny you should mention that. I heard Christmas Wrapping for the first time this past weekend and it went straight onto my Christmas playlist.

Todd has a "before the hit" section and there was a little on the actual band beforehand he then kinda trailed off on Christmas Wrapping... before getting to the actual I know what boys like part.

So after watching this I decided to look up some of The Waitresses' other stuff besides their two big songs and it's all pretty generic early 80's pop. Pretty good, but mostly forgettable. I hate to say it but I think that all mostly falls on Patty Donahue. She has a very flat, nasally voice with very little range. It works great for "I Know What Boys Want" (where she's supposed to sound bitchy) and "Christmas Wrappings" (which is almost a spoken-word song), but for everything else it just sounds really unmemorable and samey.

Comparing Patty Donahue to Debbie Harry, I don't think is a fair comparison. A better comparison might be Chrissie Hynde.

I have never, EVER heard their Christmas song. Neither have I. It must be a regional thing.

It is one of the near inescapable songs in New York.

It is one of the near inescapable songs in New York. Yeah, as a New Yorker "Christmas Wrapping" gets fairly regular play time on the radio around the holidays. Has since I was a kid.

Is it us Americans that only know “Christmas Wrapping” then? The radio stations have always played the f*** out of it.

I hear Christmas Wrapping multiple times a day at work, in multiple versions. As Todd talks about in the video, it didn't really become a perennial tune until after Patty Donahue's death.
I Know What Boys Like is one of the most thoroughly obnoxious, contemptible songs ever written. I know that's sort of supposed to be part of the appeal, but if you set out to write an obnoxious song, and do so...congratulations? Just because you did it on purpose doesn't make it any more listenable. Todd's defense of the song was well-argued but even he tops out at admitting that the song is unique more than it is good.

I have never, EVER heard their Christmas song. Yep. Had never heard of it until watching the video the other night. Now part of that is I gave up on Radio back in 96 or 97.

Surprised some people don’t know their Christmas song. Admittedly, I didn’t know it was from the same band, but I thought it was a fairly well known Christmas song.
