It wasn’t until this year that I realized how self-important the movie theater industry is.

There are still movies I will want to see on the big screen..... however, who knows how long it will be until we are truly safe. Selfishly, I want to see some new (big budget) movies again. I'm fine with this. I'm hoping Marvel/Disney will finally put Black Widow on Disney Plus....even if I have to pay $20-$30 to see it.

I'm cool with this. Personally I think the whole system needs to change anyway. Much like music and books are primarily digital now with physical media more of a nostalgia thing for collectors (and some people who just prefer regular books because that's what they are used to) I think movies should evolve into something you primarily watch at home and then movie theaters should be more of a niche thing for people who specifically want that experience. Personally I'm happy not having to go to a theater to see new movies. I don't really enjoy the theater experience. It's just a bunch of mostly strangers sitting silently watching a screen. At least at a concert or sporting event, there is crowd interaction that makes the experience special and different than watching it on tv.

According to Deadline, Legendary wants them to remove Godzilla vs Kong and Dune from this. They also revealed that they were only given 30 minutes notice before WB made the call.

Point taken. It's such a hard place to be between, missing things but realizing what is going on right now. Some people will attempt to prey on me because of this conflict though.

And Nolan is now basically calling them morons... he called HBO Max the worst streaming service... and is basically really not at all happy with the decision which shouldn't be terribly surprising except for the fact that Nolan has been super loyal to Warner as their in house Auter director. www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/christopher-nolan-rips-hbo-max-as-worst-streaming-service-denounces-warner-bros-planBut as pointed out in this tweet ... it is at least Partially Nolan's fault for WB pivoting so hard like this... since Tenet failed so spectacularly showing that people aren't going to theaters in a pandemic.

Yeah, I find it hard to particularly find Nolan's input useful when he was all, "I'm going to save the movie theater industry!" about it only to fail pretty spectacularly at it.
Really in general I think it's high time for theaters to just become a niche novelty thing. Even without taking the pandemic into account, it's just a very old, outdated business model that isn't at all practical anymore. And theaters were struggling even before COVID happened.

I mean, if you’re asking if this should have been planned out better? Absolutely, no doubt about it. Like, from other places, Nolan isn’t the only person annoyed by this with many other people apparently annoyed about treatment and Guilds being annoyed about it etc so we’re going to be hearing the fallout of this for a long time.
On the other hand, a lot of this was going to happen eventually because, well, we’re still in a global pandemic, America is one of the worst affected places and will be for a long time and as pointed out, nobody was willing to go see Tenet during a time when going into small, inclosed spaces was up there as one of the worst things to do.
Like, the wider blame isn’t Nolan or Warner Bros but stuff we literally can’t talk about here so all of this is just a side story to a wider, even more astounding shit show.

I can understand Legendary being upset about this, especially since they were close to a $250 million deal with Netflix to stream Godzilla vs Kong there when WB blindsided them with the announcement. Considering the more limited reach HBO Max still has, I don't blame them.

HBO Max also doesn't have like 4k streaming yet either at the moment... it apparently WILL with the release of Wonder Woman 84. But Netflix, Disney and the others all do currently... I mean that doesn't affect me at all but... like people that have those type of connections probably want stuff like that. the fact it's not on ROKU yet... and only recently coming to Amazon... isn't great either.

I see their point if they weren't consulted. This move is only to drive up numbers for HBO Max and the production studios dont benefit from this at the slightest

I love watching a movie with surround sound and with a large group of people and a large bucket of movie theater popcorn. I doesn't get better than that.

If you have a good crowd it can make the experience special. Big action movies and comedies especially. Endgame’s finale wouldn’t have been half as special on a small screen. And I wouldn’t have died laughing during Borat or Deadpool in a room by myself.

So much of not just Endgame, but Infinity War, was sharing the shock, the laughs, the sadness, all of the emotion with everyone around you. Even now, the audience reactions to the Portals scene has been more viral than any straight up clip from the film. That's not even taking into account how many of these movies may have been shot in 3D or IMAX, which is just lost in the transition to television; Avatar is one of the most boring blockbuster films I have ever seen, and every time I ask how it ever made the money it did, the response is almost always "you had to see it in 3D".

Endgame and Infinity War are the only movies I've gone to a "Midnight Showing" for. They were incredible to see in a full theater. I do think the big budget blockbusters will still see wide releases in movie theaters, when things get calmed down (hopefully). I just wonder about the smaller scale movies.

Smaller scale movies been getting f***ed for a while. Who knows how this will all play out though.
