The "Buzz....But Not Toy Story Buzz" element may have hurt it too. Yeah they've literally given this Lightyear his own separate toy mold to buy, which on the one hand I get just for the fact that it's a business thing, but on the other hand, that's not what Buzz, the toy, looks like, it's what inspired the toy, and what the toy looks like. It's literally how the movie opens, it's very weird, it's essentially an innacurate toy based off a movie based off a movie that featured a toy that was made about that movie supposedly... like you don't gotta make this so complicated.

I was initially interested in Buzz getting his own movie, especially since Toy Story 2 through 4 are basically the adventures of Woody, so if they made Toy Story 5 without Woody, I think it could have still be alright. When I found out that it was essentially going to be a completely different character, I wasn't very interested. Plus, regardless of how I feel about him personally, Tim Allen just has that unique voice that fits the character.

But the dynamic was perfect in the first one as Buzz figured out who he was. The second was probably the best film as Buzz gets to be the hero and lead the secondary toys on an adventure. The third he’s sidelined for most of the film being either Spanish or OG Buzz. The fourth was such a disappointment for the character as he’s regulated to the secondary cast, which the secondary cast were locked in the rv for most of the movie, instead of getting great one liners and characters having their own feelings and objectives. They were as bland and forgettable as the secondary characters in Cars. Which I always felt were so generic, one would pull forward say a bad joke and reverse.

For me it was kind of a mix of just not finding it to be an interesting premise, feeling like the Toy Story series has pretty much been milked so much at this point that I don't really especially care about it anymore, and knowing it'll be on Disney+ sooner rather than later anyway.

The "Buzz....But Not Toy Story Buzz" element may have hurt it too. And the fact there's a whole animated series made prior to this, so it felt doubly unnecessary not to be faithful to that

I think while the first movie put more focus on Woody over Buzz, they got the right level of screen time over one another and the dynamic with one another was excellent. In the subsequent movies, Buzz gets probably 25% to Woody's 75%. And on top of that, they hardly get to share in the adventure together. Good movies, but the first one always felt like the best .

Do really hope Disney's takeaway from this doesn't end up being, "Pixar can't get it done anymore." Having several movies in a row not released theatrically then when they do get one again it flops despite being an established property could reflect very badly on them.

Yeah the odd thing is all the ones they plopped on Disney+ have been pretty good. This just seemed like a super unnecessary movie…

Agreed... say what you want about the movie itself, but the animation was amazing.

My head cannon is this movie is “live action” which is why the toys, bed sheets, and video games have a more cartoon design.

I've yet to meet a bigger fan of the toy story franchise than myself tbh and I'm looking forward to seeing it tomorrow. Hopefully it'll not disappoint and I love Pixar but their recent output has been patchy tbh

I'm with the general consensus-- it looks fine but I've no need to pay to see it when it'll be streaming in like 2 months.

I think another thing that hurt this movie is the whole right-wing anti-"woke" crowd complaining about something that happened only once in the film and also very early on that if you blink, you'll miss it. It really wasn't a big deal.
Anyway, here is my take as I wrote it on the "Track the Movies You Watched (2022)" thread.

The anti woke crowd was never going to see the film anyway, given their general attitude towards Disney.

Next I hope they make a movie about Mrs. Nesbitt.

My son is getting excited to see this But the last theater trip was to see Encanto and that scared him so bad he wouldn’t even watch anything I described as a movie He’s grown a lot since then but I’m not sure Well to update, we did take my son to see it A few bits with Zurg had him a bit scared but overall he loved it and said he couldn’t wait to see it again I enjoyed it as well. Very basic stuff mostly, a great My Kid’s First Sci Fi Action Movie sort of thing. But there was enough there for adults on the emotional side too.
