He was just something so fresh and new in mid 2001 really. As someone who didn’t really watch ECW people loved his style when he came in. I know I was a bit burnt out by the Invasion angle and Austin as a heel just not working (yeah it gave us funny moments but no one wanted to boo him) so he was a shining light in at that time a stale main event picture.

I actually liked his first Invasion theme. The one that evolved into One of A Kind. The dialogue between JR and Heyman at the Unforgiven 2001 PPV when RVD entered with the theme is still in my head. JR:"Hahaha, the breast of luck, ya get it?" Heyman:"It wasn't funny." JR:"THE BREAST OF LUCK!" Heyman:"IT WASN'T FUNNY!"

I assumed it was him not being a "WWE guy," despite his popularity.

Didn't they purposely mute RVD chants at the time?

Really? Then who was it who told Vince he was too stiff and couldn't hang? I coulda swore it was X-Pac. I know somebody did. I feel like those names aren’t out there. The way Jericho tells the story Vince ran him down about how much he sucked and his contract wasnt worth the paper it was written on and then said “You’re wrestling X-Pac, if you can’t have a good match with him, you can’t have one with anyone”. So someone between his debut and a Raw match with X-Pac. I've heard Jericho tell the story before. The Vince quote sounds about right, and after being put with X-Pac Jericho asked him what Vince wanted. X-Pac laid out the matches and also explained what Vince wanted to see in his matches. As you said, Jericho credits X-Pac for saving his job and putting him on the right path with Vince.

He did really good on Raw in 2002, but I feel he could have done better on Smackdown in that period.
