I’m watching the Flair/Funk “I Quit” match and for some reason it made me think of an MMA video I saw where a skilled fighter was paired against someone way under his skill level. I’m going by memory here so this may not be 100% accurate, but once the skilled guy realized how overmatched the other guy was (I think he had been striking him and he couldn’t effectively defend himself and the ref wasn’t stopping the fight), he stepped back, bent down and tapped the mat rather than really mess the other guy up.
So that made me wonder if there has ever been an I Quit match where one guy was just destroying the other, but the guy wouldn’t quit, so in a show of respect and (kayfabe) not wanting to permanently injure his opponent, the guy kicking all the ass said I Quit?
It would have to be part of a face turn or some kind of odd face v face or maybe tweeter/face grudge match with no title on the line. And hopefully wouldn’t be part of any Russo-ish worked shoot BS.
It would be odd, but it could work as the guy showed he was dominant but the other guy gets the win.
So, what’s your thought? Has it happened? Would it work if done the right way?

The only thing that comes to mind (and it's not an I Quit match) would be Nash/Hall at Halloween Havoc 1998 where Nash left the ring to get counted out after powerbombing Hall twice.

I don't think it's happened, but that could be interesting with the right character. You'd probably need it it to be really brutal to work, though, and not get a reaction like a DQ in a Hell in a Cell they abruptly had to retcon into a no contest.
Like, if you're not bloodied and doing something really rough, then I don't think it works.

That exactly happened in an episode of DS9, actually. Worf was captured and had to fight a gauntlet of Jem'Hadar. By the time he got to the last one, he was exhausted and damn near crippled, but he refused to yield, even when the Jem'Hadar he was fighting encouraged him to.
Finally, the Jem'Hadar yielded, saying he could not defeat Worf. It was a very powerful moment, and it would translate perfectly to an I Quit match.
Something like a Triple H vs Daniel Bryan match, where Triple H finally quits simply because he cannot defeat Daniel Bryan.
Or even better, the Brock Lesnar vs Dean Ambrose match. That would have been a perfect moment to showcase crazy/psycho Dean Ambrose, just not giving up to the point that Lesnar would have to be the one to.

In some alternate universe where the double turn never happened, this would have been an awesome ending for Hart/Austin.
