I have never quite understood what this fully means. In CM Punk's WWE documentary, they said he grabbed that ring when his contract was expiring and just started doing his own promos and not doing the ones' the writers give to him.
Under this definition, it means that anyone who follows the script is never going to grab that brass ring. So basically, you have to walk around the company and act like you don't care if you get fired?
Austin has been pretty vocal about being "all in" when he got to WWE and if he got fired for doing something forbidden he would have just lived with it.
Is THIS what they want talent to do? To specifically not do what they are told?

Nah, it's just a term people throw around.
No one really knows what people will like or dislike, not completely. It's usually a catch lightning in a bottle scenario.

It's Vince speak to explain why someone he didn't want to push never got a chance. That way he's blameless, cause in this scenario they just didn't have what it took to reach the top.

Do everything that Vince & Co. ask for EXACTLY and also get over like The Rock.

Fittingly enough for Vince, it's an old carny term. Apparently in some old fairgrounds they would have these brass rings dangling from the roof of the carousel. If you could grab one as you went round, you would win a prize - also fittingly for this metaphor, they were usually just out of reach.
Vince McMahon saying 'reach for the brass ring' is basically his way of motivating talent to strive, to reach for the top. "You've got to want it!" But if the office doesn't care, no amount of work will get you anywhere. It's why Punk called them "imaginary".

It's a way to justify not pushing somebody that got over organically.

But up until then, totally agree with you.

the idea is that you make the most of the time you have. Sell the shit that they give you and get over.
The problem is that... like when it happens Vince usually doesn't care and shit doesn't change... especially recently.
