How Jack Gallagher was ruined

I am rewatching Royal Rumble 2017. Gallagher was a surprise entrant, and received a fairly decent pop for someone who at the time was relatively new to the mainstream tv audience. The umbrella spot he did with Mark Henry was entertaining, and I am surprised WWE did not do anything noteworthy with him after. 

I always felt he was ruined once he turned heel. While he may never have been World Champion material, he could have had some decent underdog babyface matches against some giant heels at the time. He could have been the fan favorite like Spike Dudley was to the original ECW, and had some really good big man/small man matches on the main roster with the likes of Big Show, Braun Strowman, and whoever else he could bump for that was twice his size. Imagine him bumping and selling for the big man and getting that crowd sympathy in the process, but we never got that.

Jack Gallagher was a piece of shit rapist, as mentioned.

He's also a notorious theif, stealing (not borrowing, or influenced, but outright stealing) most of his schtick from his contemporaries who weren't with WWE or on their radar at the time.

Let's not forget the 2017 hubbub when he note-for-note beat-for-beat took so much of Marty Scurll's umbrella routine. I know, wrestlers have had umbrellas as weapons prior to that (even fairly recently before that during Jeff Hardy's Willow era in TNA), but Gallagher was outright doing full sequences that were Marty's.

I'm more wondering if the 2017 Rumble was snakebit. One sex scandal wrestler is unfortunate, three looks like carelessness. Add in one death ( ), one case of cancer (thankfully beaten), one fired for kicking a midget in the face, several nasty injuries and so on... unusually cursed Rumble.

I feel like he really just wasn't actually very good to begin with. The Gentleman stuff was fun, sure, but outside of the initial heel turn segment he was universally terrible from then on. ... And really even before that the Kendrick feud was dire.

I remember when some people were talking about him like he was a "better" version of Zack Sabre Jr., calling the latter boring.

I think a lot of that was that people just didn't have a lot of exposure to the UK scene, and even if calling ZSJ boring was unfair, the tournament wasn't really a good way to showcase him in a short amount of time.

Nowadays, though, I think the heel turn and Suzuki-Gun run as made Sabre more liked than many ever, and Gallagher, uhhh... even before the truth came out, that shine had faded hard.

yeah, he got a massive ship tattoo on his chest.

He is also the only person that was involved in the WWE's Metoo stuff that seemed to suffer any real consequences.

and that was allegedly because Gallagher bit the bullet himself, saying he didn't remember the events but didn't deny they happened.

Even before it ultimately turned out that he was more trouble than he was worth (understatement), they started overdoing the umbrella schtick and pigeonholed him onto 205 Live and he became just another guy.
