I just finished watching No Mercy 2002 and Backlash 2004's main events on the network and it's amazing to see how just how...average they pan out. They're far from the five star classics that they appeared to be on initial reception. Backlash's 'Final Encounter' really feels restrained compared to the superior three-way at 'Mania, even if it has a great ending with Shawn in the sharpshooter.
The 'Taker vs Brock match isn't even a patch on their 2015 HIC encounter, despite the added blood. 'Taker pretty much makes doofus error after doofus error and doesn't appear to put up much of a fight at all against Brock, who's hungry and certaingly is on the offensive and defensive for most of the match, selling where he can. Undertaker is more or less selling throughout, maybe that's me missing the point of the story though.
Anyone got this vibe from watching PPV matches you thought were eye-openers at the time?

Most would disagree with your No Mercy 2002 assessment.
For me, Idk if it's tv level, but I think Bret/Owen Summserslam 94 isn't all that people make it out to be.
