Agreed with all this. I'm slightly biased in that I've interviewed Gareth Edwards twice before Godzilla production began but still. I think too having been exposed to monster movies in the past (ie, being older) helps with that movie. I totally get younger viewers wanting that sweet Godzilla special effects tsunami from start to finish - and they're not wrong, that shit was fun in the sequel and also fun in Kong Skull Island - but for older kids who saw men in suits beat each other up for decades before this......something new, different, maybe more plot/story/acting driven, maybe even just a bit askew from expectations, is good too. Patience helps. Nahhhh I was watching those two dudes in suits beating each other up and I was very let down in the original. On another note, I'm glad they went forward with this movie instead of canning the whole thing after King of the Monsters wasn't a huge success.

I had only seen Kong Skull Island and really enjoyed it. I finally sat down and watch the 2014(?) Godzilla movie and really enjoyed it. I need to watch King of the Monsters to get ready for this.... I'll probably watch it this weekend, maybe trying to sneak in a Kong rewatch just as a refresher.

From what I can see, budget of $170-$200 million and a worldwide box office of $386 million. In this day and age, I'm still surprised it didn't get canned with those numbers. From what I can tell, The Mummy had similar numbers and totally tossed out the planned "dark universe."

And they must be doing well enough because a few weeks ago it was confirmed that Toho and Legendary have extended their agreement for a few more years, which means we'll be getting at least 1 movie beyond GvK.

They were already way too deep into Godzilla vs Kong that even if KotM only brought in $750 total GvK was getting finished. Principal photography started over 6 months before KotM was released EDIT: I just looked it up, they actually completed principal photography a couple weeks prior to KotM coming out

From what I can tell, The Mummy had similar numbers and totally tossed out the planned "dark universe." It was pretty much a BVS-to-Justice League scenario where by the time the damage from the previous movie was done the sequel was far too deep into production to back out or significantly change course. As things stand, Legendary's deal with Toho expired last year and while Legendary are keen to make more movies if Godzilla vs. Kong is a success, Toho are reportedly holding out for more money.

Just got done watching it(it’s love on HBO Max now), and it was amazing. I know it is always tempting in the rush of hype after a new release to immediately claim it your favorite in a series, but I legit think this is my favorite Monsterverse film so far. They finally found that sweet spot of human to Kaiju content in a Monsterverse Godzilla film(they had already nailed it with Skull Island so Kong was already sitting good on that front).
And the fight scenes are holy crap!

I liked Godzilla 2014, really liked Kong Skull Island and King of the Monsters.
So I'm interested, and I'm an old G-fan anyway, seeing all of the old movies (yeah even All Monsters Attack, gahhh). Don't know quite when I'll get to see this one but I hope I'll enjoy it.

{Spoiler} F***. That. Ending. Are you f***ing kidding me? An incredibly badass an well done MechaGodzilla gets taken down by 2 teenagers and a flask of whiskey? That is leaving a terrible taste in my mouth, it’s almost ruining the entire movie for me.
I didn’t actually write anything down for this, but here’s some sporadic other thoughts from the flick
- I enjoyed Skarsgard, Rebecca Hall and the little girl. They were genuinely enjoyable, and I connected with the characters.
-Millie Brown and Kyle Chandler didn’t need to be in this movie. Even before the stupid whiskey thing, I felt their entire subplot was superfluous and could have been handled in better ways. They were excuses for exposition dumps.
-The fights were good. Sooo, so f***ing fun
- Kong and Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla needed another 10 minutes. Either tighten up the first hour, or just say f*** it and add extra fight time but that was awesome.
-I thought the axe was goofy at first, but it gave Kong a logic defense against Godzilla just nuking his face off so I warmed up to it
-The fights were seriously awesome!!
-Kong damn near did a Steiner Bulldog at one point, smashing Godzilla’s face into a skyscraper. That was awesome
-Kong himself is incredibly well done, you really connect with him as well. He’s not Andy Serkis, but they also weren’t trying for that level of audience connection
-F*** that ending tho
-But I hope this does well, because after KotM and this I really want more Monsterverse movies

I thought it was pretty good. I think King of the Monsters was better. Not having the iconic Godzilla theme really brought it down a bit.

{Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}They really nerfed Godzilla in this one to make it look like Kong had a shot. Not complaining, it's just a movie about a big lizard fighting a big gorilla. I just thought it was funny that in the last movie Godzilla incinerates Ghidorah with just his aura but he had trouble keeping down a gorilla with an axe lol. I enjoyed the movie overall, but Godzilla seemed like kind of an afterthought and they were more focused on Kong's journey. One thing I've really enjoyed about these movies is how they really hammer home how the monsters are just forces of nature, not giant super heroes. They just wanna kill each other, they're not acting out of some sort of heroic duty to humanity.

Batman v Superman was a lot better this time around. {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}Exactly! With Kong Superman punching Godzilla, and the scene with Zilla's foot on Kong's chest, if it had subtitles, it would be:
Kong: SAVE MARTHA.
Godzilla: HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT NAME?
KONG: Save Martha.
