General Mills Is Launching a ‘Ghostbusters’ Cereal That’s Filled With Marshmallows

The excitement for the new Ghostbusters: Afterlife film is already real, because themed foods are coming out to celebrate the release. Just yesterday, we learned about the Hostess Muncher Madness Twinkies, and now we’ll be able to start our day with the movie, too, with General Mills’ offering.

It looks like General Mills is releasing a Ghostbusters: Afterlife cereal soon enough. A product listing has popped up on Walmart’s website showing what appears to be non-final cereal box. It shows the Ghostbusters logo and a bowl of cereal filled with bright orange crunchy pieces, and white and green ghost-shaped marshmallows. The look alone already has us ready to dive in spoon-first!

The very faint print at the top of the box says that it consists of fruity-flavored cereal with marshmallows — which is interesting, because the new Twinkies are made with a fruity-flavored filling. So clearly, Ghostbusters and fruit flavors are going hand-in-hand here.

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife film is expected to be released in June 2021, so we can only assume that the General Mills cereal will be out ahead of that time. Get your spoon ready to devour a couple bowls!

“That’s a big Twinkie.”

Hostess makes a range of well-known snacks, but Twinkies might be the most recognizable of them all. The brand must have a thing for the Ghostbusters movies, because it is releasing another Twinkies variety inspired by the film to be released this year.

Four and a half years ago, Hostess unveiled the Key Lime Slime Twinkies in honor of the Ghostbusters (2016) movie. The golden sponge cake was stuffed with bright green key lime-flavored filling. The limited-edition cakes came and gone, but now there’s a new variety coming out for the Ghostbusters: Afterlife film that’s being released in June 2021.

The new Ghostbuster Muncher Madness Twinkies consists of golden sponge cake with a fruit-flavored creamy filling. The bright blue filling certainly stands from other Twinkies we’ve seen before. Each box consists of 10 individually wrapped cakes, as usual.

“Hostess Ghostbusters Twinkies need no introduction. Live Your Mostess with one sweet bite at a time of creamy, cakey, golden goodness. These treats aren’t just for dessert. They’re perfect for picking up on your way out the door, or grabbing one to enjoy a quiet moment,” the description says.

Instagram account @i_need_a_snack_ brought these Twinkies to our attention with a picture of the box featuring the Ghostbusters: Afterlife logo. However, that packaging didn’t give the full details on the flavoring. Luckily, a different, yet similar, Ghostbuster Muncher Madness Twinkies box was also posted on Blain’s Farm & Fleet, a regional retail chain store, that let us know the filling is fruit-flavored.

Now all that’s left to do is wait for official word on when these limited-edition Twinkies will be out in stores. Since the movie is coming out in June 2021, it doesn’t sound like we’ll have to wait long.

The cereal looks just like Elf, Mandalorian, etc. Some sweetened Kix-like cereal, just with different marshmallows.

At least it isn't the Funko rings, though.

Saw the trailer and what immediately came to mind was a parody of film remakes I saw on "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" (Thundergun). I don't want some story about a kid "discovering" what Ghostbusters were 40 years into the future.

Seeing the box again makes me think....

General Mills should revive Pac-Man cereal, as it would fit their template for licensed cereals more. (the original had the marshmallows + same sweetened puffs)

They don't need a special.Twinkie flavor. That actually kind of ruins it. They should just advertise the movie real big on regular boxes of Twinkies because that's what Egon ate.

They're similar, but Ecto Cooler has a bit of a tangerine taste that Orange Lavaburst doesn't have.

Yeah, Orange Lavaburst is not Ecto Cooler.

Ecto Cooler was "Crazy Citrus Cooler" or "Shoutin Orange Tangergreen." since it was an orange/Tangerine juice... and not an ORange/Apple/Pear thing that Lavaburst is.

Just bumping to make a small note, although the Ghostbusters tie-in Twinkie was cancelled, it is pretty much confirmed it was renamed and released as Tropical Blast Twinkies.

An aside, but if they are going to milk the Ghostbusters license in various ways, the rights holders should honestly try to get Extreme Ghostbusters on blu-ray, or at least let Discotek do it.
