Came across a couple YouTube vids from the early 90s of the original show. Hadn't really seen it since I did watch it now and then back in say 92.
What struck me as much as anything else is just how good a host Adamle was back then. He was just legitimately a really good game show host/on the mic.
The contrast between his heyday then and what we saw in WWE is just really striking. Am I remembering right that he may be suffering from some CTE effects which would explain some of his gaffes in his WWE tenure? If so, that really sucks.
But yeah, early 90s Adamle was just a really good host.

Having Vince yelling in your ear can unnerve anyone honestly. It's a totally different sort of thing to call.

I love American Gladiators growing up. It seemed like an extension of WWF to me. Mike was a mainstay as the lead commentator and was great. I think he was a bit in over his head in WWE. With Gladiators he was coming in on the start of the show so didn't have too many names and customs of the company to learn. WWE isn't for everyone and not for Mike unfortunately. I wouldn't call him much worse than a lot of other commentators that WWF/WWE had like Craig DeGeorge, Sean Mooney or Michael Cole. It's just that fans saw Mike as an outsider since he was coming from a football background.

I was just always disappointed that when Adamle was in WWE, they never got the rights to the classic early 90s American Gladiators theme for him.

I can't imagine battling what is by all accounts pretty serious CTE while that old goof screeches like a child at you all night is a particularly winning combo. Honestly the fact that they kept making fun of him over his gaffes on air is a great example of how ugly the McMahons can be as people.

Don’t believe his CTE was known at that point, which is why everyone was joking about Adamle at the time (even here I’d presume).

Now maybe Mike should have done his homework prior to taking the job but if anything it shows that WWE is not nearly as mainstream as McMahon lies to himself and others into believing. Jeff Hardy and The Tazz aren't exactly well known outside of wrestling circles.

Mike was great. Always liked him. Just didnt fit with Vince & sadly with some it tainted the way his career is viewed.

I've said before that I give Mike some slack, we all made jokes but he also came across as a nice guy

Yeah, it came out a few years later and we all collectively went "this makes a lot of sense" Yeah, I'm pretty sure the diagnosis didn't come till later. Dude always seemed like he was happy to be there and seemed nice enough he just made gaffs a lot. Which again were likely tied to the undiagnosed CTE he was experiencing.
