Terry Funk is a living legend whose career has spanned decades, since his young days as a babyface he reinvented himself as the hardcore classic heel. What if Terry Funk were a transitional WWF Champion? I was thinking: when would be the ideal time for his 7 months reign, who he might depose and who his opponents might be, and to whom Funk would eventually drop the title. Remember he returned to NWA rings in 1989 in top physical condition. Let’s propose an alternate timeline in the history of the WWF championship, inserting Funk in the mix, managed by his brother Dory Funk Jr.

The hottest time to do it in terms of his character and physical condition would have been late-'85/early-'86, but that would have seriously messed with the momentum of the Hulkamania years. Best I can envision is Funk cheating Hogan out of the belt on the 1/4/86 SNME and Hogan regaining at WM2. I certainly wouldn't give Funk seven months with the title.
The most realistic time, honestly, was 1998, as a wrinkle in the Foley/Austin storyline. Foley fails to get the belt off Austin after a number of tries. The night after Judgment Day, Funk gets a title shot against Austin on RAW (much to Foley's outrage). McMahon, the stooges and a million other people interfere, most of them trying to take out Austin, and Funk somehow ends up winning the match and the belt. Foley is incensed. Kane is declared No. 1 contender and beats the living hell out of Funk one week later to take the belt, with help from Foley. Then Austin regains from Kane at KOTR (skipping the whole First Blood business). Foley and Funk have the hardcore match to end all hardcore matches at Fully Loaded, leading to Funk then stepping away.

I realize hypocrisy is nothing new to the industry, but man, the WWF giving a 50-something year old Funk a World Title reign in the early days of the Attitude Era would've really messed up their "WWF is the hot young new era of pro wrestling and WCW is a bunch of washed-up old farts" narrative that they were pushing at the time. Honestly, best use of Funk as WWF Champion would've been the transitional guy between Bob Backlund and Hulk Hogan in 83-84. Probably would've gotten more mileage out of rematches between Hogan and Funk then they did out of Hogan and Sheik.

Early 1980s is the only time it could work, as mentioned. As great a man Terry is he never stayed long in a promotion so why would promoters even trust he would stay for a short transitional reign. He left WWF in 1986 after less than a year. He was in WCW late 89, eary 90. I don't recall for how long but don't remember it being long. He lasted in WCW for about 5 months. I didn't follow his ECW days but when he came back to WWF, a few months after retirement in 1997 he lasted about 8 months. And of course he turned down his spot at Survivor Series 1993 due to his horse being sick but I think some have called BS on that.
Terry strikes me as a Roddy Piper type. Great man, amazing family man but his loyalty is not to a promoter. I get some would say that's a good thing, promoters aren't loyal to wrestlers but as a fan I didn't really enjoy guys coming in for shorts stints and leaving. 1980s and 90s Funk wasn't exactly an Andre 1970s attraction that should be bouncing from promotion to promotion. Him as the Iraqi sympathizer would have been awful but probably less so than Slaughter and once Terry lost a big PPV to Hulk he would have left so no silly "I want my country back" angles.

Iraqi Sympathizer Terry Funk. He was batshit insane enough to pull it off "On April 1st, 1990, an horrible crime was committed!! It was when this buffoon, the Ultimate Jackass, became the World Wrestling Federation Heavyweight Champion!! It was like when a cockroach came up between the floor boards and stole the cheese! I swear to you people that I will take the WWF Title from this egg sucking dog and I will do anything to make this sure he’s out of wrestling completely!!"

The only time I could see it would be in place of the Iron Sheik as a transitional champion between Backlund and Hogan. I think defeating Sheik did more for Hogan than beating Funk would have, though.

Funk was "retired", so Vince could have just thrown him some cash and changed that. While Sheik was over in the WWF as a heel, Funk was more well known across the country, also as a former NWA champion, Hogan beating him would have meant more in the wrestling world. Although, Sheik was the perfect opponent for Hogan's character, with his anti-American attitude, something that was clearly a trend with Hogan in the 80s.

In your this scenario I could see the middle-aged and crazy Terry Funk bumping like a pinball for the Ultimate Warrior then reaching into his bag of dirty tricks as they brawled outside the ring. Dory Funk Jr. would interfere so that Warrior and the referee would take shots with a steel chair after which Warrior would be thoroughly gassed, and the referee would wake up just in time to see Funk to apply the spinning toehold for the win. Funk could defend the title as a tweener champion before dropping the belt to Randy Savage and disappearing from the WWF until his ‘97 return as Chainsaw Charlie.
