I've been avoiding it for a year or so, but I've decided it is time to get a new mattress. I just have a standard king mattress right now that is probably about as old as me (it was a guest bedroom bed from my parents' house that I took with me when I moved out 10+ years ago). It has gone from the occasional sore shoulder or back to a back or side ache when I wake up every morning and I'm waking up more and more in the middle of the night.
I've never done this before and I'm refusing to spend 2, 3, 4k or more. One of my good friends recently got a mattress from Amazon for a few hundred and loves it. It is a mattress in a box. Does anyone have any experience with that? I'm somewhat apprehensive with buying something like this that I'm not trying out in a store before hand.

I’ve heard great things about the bed in a box stuff, in the market for a new mattress myself. However, the explosion of bed in a box popularity seems to be driving down traditional mattress pricing so I’d say set a price point for yourself, check out your local furniture stores and then look into the online stuff

I would recommend a memory foam matress. I have one and it's very comfortable. They run between $200 and $400 on Amazon.

I am also mattress shopping. I'm going to go check out a local store that sells only mattresses made by a local manufacturer and hope for good prices.
If that fails I don't know. I'll just pick a bed in a box.
Pure foam seems right out, I sleep hot.

If you do Bed in a Box, it's good, but from my understanding it's not a longterm purchase, so I suggest this.
Get the bed in a box for now.
Wait until January, as that's the month all the big name department stores like Macy's go to absolutely ridiculous lengths to get rid of all of their bedroom inventory for the new year (it takes up a lot of space and it's far cheaper to sell it discounted than send it back). You can get an amazing mattress, box-spring and frame for hundreds-to-thousands less than what they would normally cost. We're talking all that in a queen or full size for under $800 easily and it will last you yeaaaaaaaars.
Also, if you do go the bed in a box route, splurge on higher quality pillows.

Now if you have the money, spend a little more and get a good foam mattress with gel injection. I’ve had an icomfort for about 8 years and it gives me a great night sleep. I’d always justify it like this. You have no problem dropping good money on a car, which maybe you spend an hour in a day. So why wouldn’t you spend money on something that you’ll be on for 8 hours a day?

Granted, I did buy it a year old and certified used and have never skimped on the maintenance on it in the 13 years I've owned it. All that said, I'm probably going to buy like a 2020 or 2021 model year car next year and send my current car to the boys' home a few miles away to auction off in their annual fundraiser auction.

I work for FedEx and I see multiple ENDY mattresses every day if that tells you anything.

I would recommend a memory foam matress. I have one and it's very comfortable. They run between $200 and $400 on Amazon. I got a memory foam mattress close to 4 years ago. Comfy as hell. But the drawback is it reflects your bodyheat back at ya. And my body temp goes up when I'm sleeping. So while the mattress is comfy during the summer I will wake up fairly hot.

When talking to the salesman, be sure to say "dog kennels" whenever referring to the mattress. If you say "mattress," he'll put a bag on his head, and everyone will need to stand in the tea chest.
