Okada was still very green coming off that bad TNA run and a shit match at WK with YOSHI-HASHI. Nobody liked the title change but luckily that man is such a generational talent as Gedo expected and by the summer everyone knew he was forreal Wato has not been able to show any flashes of brilliance I distinctly remember back when people used to shit on the Rainmaker and call it a crappy finisher, saying that his tombstone piledriver should be his finisher instead, along with people feeling like he had no business as world champion. Obviously, he rose to the occasion and Gedo's faith was validated, and Jay White would mirror this to an extent later on, but yeah, it was initially rough going. I feel like Wato is more easily overlooked and forgotten, but more viciously mocked when people deign to remember him. Pairing him with Tenzan was weird given how little the two have in common from either ring or character perspectives, and calling a newbie "Master" is just asking to be scoffed at. It's wild that a dude where blue is such an important color to his presentation wasn't paired with Yuji Nagata, given that seems like a more natural fit, but if I was Nagata, I'd favor Narita, too. Yea, it also doesn't help that Wato sort of got compared to Okada either. The myth has become that Okada was purposely bad to shock people but that's not entirely true. Ring gear and stuff aside being oversized he was def green but he improved his look, started to look more like a star and then justified Gedo putting the rocket up his ass as a once in a generation talent Wato is going through the same thing YOSHI-HASHI and Goto went through. Talented people but the push or lack there of in Wato case isn't really paying way they want and that will come back to bite him later when he has become good. Goto is still shaking off all those World title losses despite the fact he has been good for years but his f***ing titantron was him getting his ass whooped for a spell. YOSHI-HASHI has now become really well rounded and he got praise for his growth in 2020. Wato just seems out of place cause they have no real way they want to use him but the things he is supposed to be good at, he's rough on

I have a feeling that Wrestle Grand Slam will likely be instead held in smaller arenas, with the Yokohama show likely when it's rescheduled being held in Yomohama arena

I think Wato may be one of those people who would benefit from a 2nd excursion in a few years. Maybe not to Mexico this time.

Might be time to have a tracker of the New Japan Pro Wrestling vaccination tour.
Jay White has announced he will be making an appearance at the We Can Be Heroes comic book store in Chatsworth, California on June 26th.

Has there ever been an underwhelming return from excursion such as Wato Okada was still very green coming off that bad TNA run and a shit match at WK with YOSHI-HASHI. He was raw but talented. Like with SANADA, TNA was trusted to help these guys along and they f**ed both of them heavy. Luckily both men was able to tap into their natural raw talent

He got used to working around cameras in a way a lot of them don't get an opportunity to, plus there's something to be said about being able to trip before it is too far to fall yet and learn from that. Plus, meeting the Young Bucks obviously ended up being a big deal later on, though giving TNA any credit for that is overly generous.

Oh yeah without Question he learned big time in TNA just in the way intended. He took to learning the American style of playing to the camera and being more flamboyant so on a whole you put the experience as a massive positive but in a ass backwards way

They gave him a few showcase matches and then he was gone and getting chained up in a shack with James Storm doing weird shit to him

He actually had a main storyline(as odd as some of it was), he was treated seriously & was X-Division Champ...which is much better than Okado, being a cameraman for Samoa Joe following Pope around.

Ehhh, i'm not giving them credit for that He was not treated as shitty as Okada but still treated shitty. He got a good early because by that point TNA had already killed their relationship with NJPW. He got the main event from jump with Muta which is all thanks to Muta. They was not trying piss him off. He won the X division title in like his first 10 matches and was fighting people like DJZ and Tigre Uno until he dropped it to Aries again Looking back, he won the title in April. Defended it against Tigre Uno and DJZ in some fashion in every one of his title matches. Dropped the title in June after Slammiversary and was with James Storm before July ended They treated him right for 3 months before they got bored and then he spent the next year being errand boy for Broke Wyatt Stable
