In Sid’s defense, by his own admission, he had no idea he main evented Mania 8 with Hogan. He didn’t forget. He didn’t know. Sid wasn’t exactly the most tuned in employee. How can someone not be aware that they main evented against one of(if not THE) biggest name in the history of the sport on the biggest show if the year? Who knows? The WrestleMania banners, cameras, pretapes and thousands and thousands of people didn’t tip him off, so what would? I love telling that story because he told it. If anyone else said this you’d just assume it’s a terrible attempt at “Look how dumb Sid is” but nope. He told it himself.

I have my doubts of any formal offer for Sid to replace Hogan since, while Sid obviously tended to get pretty popular, he didn't like being a face and felt the money for him was being a monster heel. He probably wasn't wrong, judging by how dogshit most of WWF's attempts to have face champions over 6'5 ever turned out. (Barring Hogan himself, obviously.) Well than 96 / 97 is the best of both worlds. He got to be a face with all the money that comes with it, but still do heel stuff. He attacked an old man and his son, and everyone still loved him. Like the WWF version of body suit man. Of course everyone still loved him. The old man was Jose Lothario.

And I say that as someone who loves Sid and has a painting of him hanging in my living room. I hope it’s at least a tasteful nude.

Sid turning down Hogan's spot has been widely reported and I'm almost positive even Bruce Prichard confirmed that Vince wanted Sid to have Hogan's spot but Sid turned it down because he preferred to be a heel. As far as Sid's plans beyond WM 8. I remember the second show I ever attended was a house show in May 1992. It was supposed to be main evented by Warrior vs. Sid. It was changed to Warrior vs. Papa Shango a couple weeks before the show. I think Mooney or Okerlund reported that Sid was "suspended" for some reason. In reality it was softball season and Sid had more important things to worry about than the job that paid him a lot of money. Know what’s funny? Kevin Thorne was broken into wrestling by Sid and claimed Sid never talked about or played softball as long as he knew him. He speculated the softball thing was just an excuse from Sid for not wanting to wrestle.

Would this make Sid the only person to turn down being the top face of WWF/E?
