But where do we stand on SHEIK TUGBOAT? If you thought Turncoat Slaughter resulted in Mania VII bombing (Not that. As in ticket sales were so low they had to move to a smaller statium) I can't imagine Sheik Tugboat would have gotten any better numbers. It'd have been Shockmaster but two years early.

Why would they move over that? That's just the risk you are taking running a venue as big as the LA Coliseum They could have sold 3x the number of tickets they did and still had tens of thousands of empty seats. There was an XFL game there once where the place looked empty even though the attendance was over 40,000.

I think they took Tugboat off TV for many months after he turned on Hogan at the Royal Rumble and he didn’t appear again on TV until July by doing a heel turn on the Bushwhackers. At least, that’s what I recall from my 12-year-old self.
Does anyone know if his TV absence was injury related or if they just decided to retcon the Hogan turn since a Hulk vs Typhoon match was more suitable for the house show circuit and Coliseum Home Video?

Nothing happened with Tugboat at Royal Rumble. He eliminated Hogan from a battle royal on SNME in late-April. There was no real absence before the turn, either. He had a squash match taped on May 7 that aired the weekend of June 1-2, then his heel turn was taped on May 28 and aired June 15-16.

There was an XFL game there once where the place looked empty even though the attendance was over 40,000. The story that Bruce Prichard has told is that the cost of extra security for the LA Coliseum was so high that it made the Coliseum too expensive. Because of the controversial angle and the global environment they thought they needed added security for the outdoor show. They asked the US Government to cover/help pay for those costs, as they had for the Super Bowl that year, but they were told to get lost. Since they weren’t going to come close to selling the place out (Bruce suspects they would’ve had 40,000-50,000 had they promoted the Coliseum all the way up to the day of the event) it would’ve been a huge loss. So they cut off ticket sales in February when they had about 16,000 and moved it to the LA Sports Arena where it was cheaper to secure the building.

The bad optics of tens of thousands of empty seats would have been an issue unless they filled the place to capacity or came close.

I went down the rabbit hole of watching some Tugboat promos. They are some of the most cringingly embarrassing wrestling promos you will ever see.

But where do we stand on SHEIK TUGBOAT? Could be weirder what if instead of Gulf War inserted it goes Dungeon of Doom and Tugboat is following some mystics from the Middle East after his last sailing excursion there and his manager is some Sultan with mystical powers and a ruby on his turban that summons a wise cracking genie predating Aladdin only a bit raunchier.

When Tugboat turned heel, I blamed it on myself. He was at a house show and I asked for his autograph. All I had was a picture of Hogan in the WWF magazine and he signed it. I blamed myself for years until I got smart to wrestling.

I mean, that sounds amazing. They could have brought in Lawler early to be the Genie.
