I'm watching RAW and Nitro in chronological order on Peacock and just saw the Super Assassins (aka The Powers of Pain) wrestle Sting and Luger. I had no idea Warlord was ever in WCW in the 1990s. Why do you guys think WCW didn't bring them in as Powers of Pain? Do you think it was because Road Warriors were coming in and they didn't want two similar tag teams?

Even as a kid I could tell it was them based on the body type. I also figured they wouldn't last long as these generic Assassin guys and I was right. I wonder what happened, Warlord would have probably been signed to a long term deal and made money just staying home. I doubt they just released him. Not long after Barbarian came in as Barbarian with Meng and they were a natural fit together. The Road Warriors didn't come in for 3 or 4 months later so unless their potential coming was planned that long in advance I don't see any issue with these guys not being able to use the old POP gimmick. But maybe their coming in was planned well in advance. But I think here it's just a case of trying to create a distinct set of characters and it didn't work.

As for Warlord I think he was on a per-night contract and just didn't get signed. He also got into a really bad car accident that took him out of wrestling for years although I don't know if that had anything to do with why WCW didn't pick him up. They may have just thought he wasn't a great worker and that Barbarian fit better in a team with Meng because their Faces of Fear teamed formed less than a month after this Super Assassins vs Sting & Luger match from this January 1 1996 Nitro. I'm pretty sure Road Warriors were expected to come in because Hawk had already been wrestling as a singles wrestler in WCW at this time while Animal was out with a really bad injury.

My educated guess is they wanted to get the Paul Jones stink off of them. Especially since as POP they were damaged goods, seen by the fans as being run of of town by Road Warriors because they wanted no part of the upcoming scaffold matches.

Was Hawk with WCW that whole time from May 1995 to when Animal came back? I don't remember him AT ALL other than Slamboree 1995. I don't remember him being on any other PPVs or Clashes. I thought he just bolted after Slamboree like he was known to do and he and Animal just happened to return in early 1996 together.

He had feuds with Kurasawa ("broke" his arm at Clash XXXI and was off TV for a long while) and fought Big Bubba a lot. Kurasawa was the guy teaming with Meng until Barbarian came in.

Now I seem to remember that. I thought Hawk wrestled Kurusawa at Slamboree but it was Meng. I can see Hawk potentially starting trouble over the Powers of Pain coming in if WCW went with that gimmick. Another thing is, it wouldn't surprise me if only WWF trademarked that gimmick and not JCP in 1988. If Warlord and Barbarian were main eventers I don't think Bischoff would care about trademarks but they were pretty low card guys at the time.

I have nothing to add but to note Warlord is one of the nicest wrestlers I’ve met. Excellent guy.

I think it was just a minor gig really, they only worked a handful of matches - thats probably why they put them under masks. By the end of Jan 1996, Warlord was gone and Barbarian was working without the mask
vs. Nasty Boys vs. State Patrol vs. Luger & Sting World War III Battle Royal

I'm guessing they were using them as enhancement but didn't want people to know who they were jobbing out.
