That's a good reason to hang it up. He was finally getting his head on straight from the looks of itr, but sometimes that comes with the wisdom to know you've got to call it quits. Nothing but respect, the reasons he's citing are the best and most important priorities he can have.

Well good for him... I thought it was weird cause he just came back but a big injury like that can make you rethink things... Hope whatever he does next makes hime happy. Don't really have to wonder... Yeah, it sucks that Lio is heading back to retirement after going on quite the tear on the indies, but it's for the right reasons. Mark Henry: *shakes Lio's hand* your AC joint is separated Lio: well it is NOW But did he split his wig? >->

I assume this was also because Khan wanted to work with him further and mightve had plans so it's nice that Lio let him know just in case he had to pivot anything. Good response too.

If he has to retire then he has to retire. I don’t understand why he’s like “but like I’ll still fulfill my obligations to wrestle whatever matches I contractually need to in NJPW.”
If he’s retiring due to injury, wouldn’t he just simply forgo those obligations and hang up the boots?

He's 26. Retiring at 26 is almost fully guaranteed to not stick when it comes to wrestling Honor your commitments when healthy and then re-evaluate and or bounce for now. It leaves good will for when and if he does come back. A door is open.

I think he does. Dude's been showing a lot of growth the past year alone. You can't burn every bridge if you still want a path back.

Crazy thing is he could take four or five years out to start raising his family and still come back and have 10 - 15 years at the top of the game.
I don't think he's gone for good, he simply has too much left to do, but if this allows him to heal in his own time and be with his babies for a bit then all power to him.

Hes running out of bridges and space to burn so he probably doesn't want to mess up the AEW and NJPW pipeline

Hes running out of bridges and space to burn so he probably doesn't want to mess up the AEW and NJPW pipeline I’m pretty sure he already did burn the AEW bridge. Maybe I’m a bit of a cynic but I feel like Khan released that statement as a kind of f*** You. Maybe he didn’t, who knows. But Lio released his announcement and less than four hours later, in the middle of the night, AEW releases an official statement and is like “THIS IS OUTTA LEFT FIELD, FUN WORKING WITH YOU *BRIEFLY* HAPPY RETIREMENT BUDDY” You have to believe Khan feels a little stupid. He invested in Rush coming in and being a big deal in the company. Rush gets injured and Khan’s like “here’s a contract anyway” and Rush gloats about it in his retirement announcement. Sorta leaves Khan in the dust looking like a bit of a cuck. Anyway, definitely a bit of a cynical angle on this and maybe I’m wrong but when Rush eventually returns to wrestling, just like other organizations, I doubt AEW will come knocking.

Yeah its a pretty cynical take on your part. Khan knew Lio signed to NJPW and already stated he wasn't heading back to AEW for a bjt

They brought him unsigned, while he was signed elsewhere, injury or no injury they were well aware that they weren't getting Lio Rush full time so I doubt this changes anything drastically. It's an unfortunate circumstance, nothing more and one that no one is to blame for. Maybe when Lio reevaluates after he's recovered he'll have a change of heart, maybe he doesn't, either way it's his life and his right to live it as he chooses.

I don't think it's suspect he'd want to finish his NJPW obligations even if he's retiring. He's 26, and even if he's wrestled most of his career in prominence, that doesn't mean he would like to leave money on the table, especially with a family. I don't think NJPW would be cruel and withhold money due to him for breach of contract, but I mean, I wouldn't want to push and find out if I were him.

He said they still wanted to sign him after he was injured/the event and it would have led to him going full time with both promotions. In other words nothing had been signed prior to his appearance and therefore it's still nothing lost nothing gained from AEW's point of view.

You said injury or no injury they knew they weren’t going to get him full-time but his statements seem to contradict that. Not saying they had grand plans for him or anything.

But yeah, my meaning was more that there was no reason for the press release from TK to be seen as snarky since they clearly hadn't guaranteed he was coming back at all even if an offer was on the table. But yeah, I did word it badly.

Wonder if he makes a quasi career out of appearing on “The Challenge.”
