Considering all the current info, my actual best bet right now would be - Cody couldn't put pen to paper because of COVID and they decided to do something with it as an angle which will play out this week. Yeah, I can see that. That and the “we need a plot for Rhodes to the Top Season 2” are the best bets.

That sounds like something Cody would do. The fact that no one knows if Cody is still an EVP or not is weird, though. And that's what makes me think it's a worked shoot (a shot work?) though. Like, if his EVP status was ended, that'd be huge news and something we'd probably know about.

I thought we did know he wasn't EVP any more?
I thought they all gave up their titles?
I'm probably confused and wrong though.

Nope. Cody, the Bucks, and Omega are all still EVP's. If they weren't, SRS wouldn't have even mentioned it in his report that Cody's EVP status was unknown.

You might be thinking of the story where Tony Khan took over more of the creative process in late 2019 which did happen but didn't affect their titles. I imagine their roles and responsibilities have shifted around a bit though.

Peter Avalon never said he is left AEW. He worked Dark tapings this Saturday, and actually didn't work Zicky Dice's show just to work Dark. He has been injured a lot, and Im sure he is just on different tier contract, a la JD Drake and Nemeth. When announcing he was open for indie dates, he even said AEW original, and mentioned the Wingmen.
Now Im sure he get will get far less dates, but he only worked 16 dates for AEW in 2021, so it might not be that different.

Cynical me assumes this "Will Cody sign a new contract???" game is a reality show storyline and/or an intentional distraction from actual talents' expiring deals to try and avoid the negative buzz WWE gets during their roster cullings. Nah. Firing people for no good reason mid-contract is a scummy move and particularly reprehensible during a pandemic. Not renewing a deal is different, everyone got what was agreed so morally it's fine, no need to distract from it. Although it can still cause a negative buzz I suppose, just in a different way.

Shows up for the Rumble for a big paycheck, re-signs with AEW, turns heel by using his new contract to challenge for the AEW World title. 4D move of the century. I wonder if WWE would hire him for a one off match. If nothing else they'd probably have him get elimated right away or otherwise try to embarrass him, but you gotta figure they'd get SOME type of bump out of having him show uo. Probably unlikely, but that would be such an awesomely WTF occurencce

I think it feels incredibly damning that my primary response to this Cody news is, "Eh." I assume he'll stick around but even if he doesn't it kind of feels like a no skin off my bones thing, which sucks since Cody's been one of my favorites for a looong time but the last couple years he's just been so damn dull.

Honestly I feel like if WWE did somehow manage to get Cody to come in they'd push him like absolute f***ing crazy because it'd be a way to signal to anyone else they want to jump ship that they'll do right by them before, y'know, they inevitably don't. Like offhand supposedly longterm they want to steal MJF and Wardlow, if you want to do that throwing Cody directly into a Mania title match or something would be a good thing you could point at in negotiating with them.

If you checked BTE it seemed that Avalon got written off the show he looks like he is gone... His last match appears to be Tuesday's Dark There is literally no source to any of this. Avalon's probably just not on a full time contract anymore. Not that he'd never show up again.

Given they've hyped Cody as returning on Dynamite, I feel like this will play a role in whatever promo he cuts, since I assume that's the road we're going.
It gives his reality show something to play off of, could give his own storylines something to play off of, guess we'll see how far it goes

Aw man, not Avalon. Although he's probably on a Pay-Per-Appearance deal. (PPA on a PPA deal, geddit?) I hope he shows up still, Avalon vs Cutler is still my favourite feud in AEW, and the blow-off match is still one of my favourite matches.
