In Praise of Shadows knocks it out of the park again, looking at the history of Nicolas Cage and his fall into memedom.

I've argued before that Cage didn't "fall" into memedom. He rose into it. This is his great success.
It's kept him relevant in pop culture. Without his wacky stuff he's just another Bruce Willis/Segal/etc making shit movies to pay the bills.

Yeah, I definitely think Cage understood what was happening and leaned completely into it

Something my mom pointed out just the other day when they announced he was gonna play Dracula is that he's great when he seems like he actually likes the movie he's making, but if he's doing it for a paycheck he phones it in.

What's to defend? He's awesome! Exactly, he's a f***ing Oscar winner, and just because current Cage takes roles for money doesn't stop movies like Mandy, Color out of Space, and Pig from existing.

Cage 100% is in on any jokes. Dude knows exactly what he's doing.

Indeed. Cage knows who he is, and what people think of him, and he's in on the joke, and gives people what they wanna see. That makes him fun unlike say a guy like Seagal who has no self-awareness whatsoever.

There's a great collegehumor video called "Nicholas Cages Agent" that makes fun of all the garbage roles he takes and There's a great little line where his agent chides him for just taking everything and Cage responds with "I like being in movies Gary"
That always stood out to me. Even in a sketch designed to make fun of him, people had to admit that it's pretty cool he loves his job and he'll pick out there stuff
Honestly I love the dude. He gave us Con Air and that movie is a delight

Cage is pretty damn good, and made things like Willy's Wonderland an unexpected delight. Although The Wicker Man remake is still an insult to one of the best horror films ever made.
