Just curious if anyone's seen it. I haven't - not really comfortable with going to the movies yet and even if I was it's the kind of thing I'd be more inclined to wait on - but I have a lot of fondness for the original so it is definitely at least on my radar, probably will watch it whenever it ends up streaming somewhere.
That said does seem like it's probably going to be the death knell for movie adaptations of musicals for the foreseeable future with how badly it's flopped.

I mean, this goes into a whole other thread but these analysts, writers and general film press remember a pandemic is still going on, right?
Like, I’m not saying it would do well even without but f***, most people aren’t exactly flocking to cinemas right now for anything because of the fact most people don’t really want to be in small spaces with other people. It’s not rocket science.

My mom loved the original, she probably will. But...CATS was probably the first nail in the coffin, as you say. On one hand it might mean moviemakers try something original. Then again, it may mean...let's remake more old movies!

Imagine if they pulled a Little Mermaid here and gave it a happy ending.

This has been proven countless times this year (No Way to Die, all of the Marvel movies). But my point is that we can’t say “This movie is a disaster” when you spent a whole year adapting to a whole new, and somewhat successful, way of distributing movies that’s way safer and expecting said people to just flock back every weekend. It doesn’t make sense.

I can't wait to see who Spielberg blames for this failiure? Superhero movies? Milenials? The Lizard People? The possibilities are endless. Place your bets here everyone!

I mean every movie I’ve seen at the theaters this years have been pretty packed and full capacity. So yeah, streaming movies may be getting popular. But There’s still a lot of people like me who still perfere the movie theatre experience

"Endless Possibilities" should be his next movie. A sequel to Close Encounters. "Superhero Millenials vs The Lizard People" is already a movie on SyFy I think.

I’m just saying the way we judge success and failure of a film is still a weird way to judge things in a time when there are plenty of places in the US or globally that have limited capacity or just opened theatres or had polls where people were reluctant to go back because, again, still a pandemics happening. We in Ireland opened cinemas back up not too long ago and just last week had to drop screenings to 50% max capacity.

The thing is, musicals in the last 20 years have been a gamble even before the pandemic. Throw in the fact that this is a remake a fairly well liked musical adaptation that many of the targeted audience have likely already seen, a cast not exactly filled with A listers, and that there's probably a calculation by some that the only big film this month they're risking COVID to see is Spider-Man No Way Home?
Well, you get the box office returns for West Side Story.

Because people are going to risk COVID for Spider-Man, just like they did for Shang-Chi, No Way To Die and Black Widow before. Like, compare other films to the big blockbusters and when they were released. I'm not saying it's the only factor but it's a f***ing big factor.

Doesn’t surprise me really. As much as I really want to see it, I know it’s not got the mass appeal of other blockbusters and although The Greatest Showman was a huge success, it had a different feel to it to an adaptation of a story that’s been adapted a hundred times. The pandemic is a factor but I don’t think it’s the main issue there.

Should I bother with this or just see the original which I also never saw The original is one of my favorite movies, so my vote is watch that one. This remake seems so pointless when the original is such a beloved classic.

Should I bother with this or just see the original which I also never saw The original has loads of problems looking from the lens of today (brownfacing white actors for a lot of the Puerto Rican characters) but if that doesn't bother you (I still watch John Waynes "The Conqueror") then yeah I'd say watch that

I see the trailers a lot and I just wonder who was clamoring for a remake of West Side Story in 2021? Did Spielberg just assume attaching his name to this was gonna automatically make money off of this?
