Should I bother with this or just see the original which I also never saw The original is a beloved classic. The new one has a 93% critic score and 95% audience score RT. I've never seen either but it sounds like you can't go wrong if you like musicals. Musical theater seems like a great source to do different adaptations of in any case, given the nature of musical theater productions.

I see the trailers a lot and I just wonder who was clamoring for a remake of West Side Story in 2021? Did Spielberg just assume attaching his name to this was gonna automatically make money off of this? I assumed this was a passion project for Spielberg. Pretty much was, I think. Also, while I’m going off on tangents, never really understood when people wonder who asked for things. That’s never really been how any industry has worked. Like, if there was a poll and a lot of people said they wanted a new adaption of West Side Story to happen, would that overrule if you wanted to see it or not? It’s up there with “overrated” in things that never really made sense to me.

I saw it with my wife, who is a big fan of musicals. It was entertaining. The weird thing in my theater was it said it was nearly full on the AMC App and then when we got there, not so much, and we were part of a focus group.
I think the move to make with this particular movie would have been to just throw it on Disney Plus, big-budget or not. The main demo that would have seen this movie is older women and I doubt they're heading to theaters in droves.
