Hello everyone!!!
Happy FRI-YAY!!!
I hope everyone is having a wonderful day and has a very relaxing, joyful, amazing weekend because everyone earned it!! I love you all!!
I had a question about heel Al Snow. I am thinking his whole heel turn was severely underutilized.
Check it out: Al Snow and Mankind were friends and even tagged together on a few occasions towards the end of 1999. Though they lost most of their matches, their friendship was pretty strong and would stand the test of time. I believe at one point, Snow saved Mankind from Val Venis' assault at one point. Then the high school-esque drama happened. Mankind befriended The Rock and together they found tag-team success, with the birth of The Rock n' Sock Connection. This did not sit well with Al.
On one episode of Raw, I think, Mankind went into the locker room and ran into The Rock. At this point in time, the writers were just doing that same ol', same ol' cliche of "this team isn't getting along...oh wait...they are still together and stronger than ever!" crap. Mankind, after some coaxing, gave The Rock a signed copy of his book as a token of his appreciation to The Rock's friendship.
I mean, let's get serious here, The Rock was probably one of the most guarded characters at that point. He didn't really like to let anyone in and seemed to be averse to any real friendships; nor did he trust anyone really into letting them know him intimately. He was the epitome of reticent. Seeing as this took place before the whole reveal of Wrestlemania XVI with it being a whole ploy to begin with, I'm shocked that The Rock trusted Vince so easily. I guess it was due to the fact that he had the most powerful McMahon in his corner and Vince kept dangling that carrot of the WWF Heavyweight Championship in his face every three seconds. To be frank, I actually liked the whole scenario of Vince being the manager of The Rock and them having an uneasy relationship, as the two had history with the Corporation. I mean, that whole storyline turned Vince babyface for a few weeks and we saw a softer side of The Rock, which I kinda liked.
Later on that night, we caught a glimpse of Mankind's book in the trash!!! Al Snow ended up finding it and he reported it back to Foley. Foley was hurt and confronted The Rock about it. And Foley wasn't feeling it. I believe The Rock 'n Sock Connection ended up losing their titles that night, if I'm not mistaken or they lost them on the very next Smackdown.
There was a match between The Rock and Mankind, and I think that ended in a no contest because Triple H interfered. I know that the same night Triple H defended his title against Al Snow and Al Snow nearly won!!
The whole thing came to a head, when it was revealed that it was Al Snow who dumped Mick Foley's book in the trash and he blamed it on The Rock. Falsely accused and hurt, The Rock tried to get his revenge on Al Snow for breaking up his and Foley's friendship. The two were pitted against each other in a "strap match" on an episode of Raw.
By this point, the writers were clearly selling the fact that Al Snow was a legit heel. He was sporting a new theme song (which sounded like psychosis), his hair was made darker and sleeker, and his mannerisms changed. No longer was this Al Snow running around with a disembodied mannequin head. This was the repackaged heel Al Snow.
I remember when the match took place. I was cheering Al Snow. The thing I disliked about the match was the fact that the NAO had to interfere in the match, which, IMHO, kinda diminished the fact that Al Snow could legitimately beat The Rock on his own. Too bad the whole feud ended in a steel cage match a week later.
Unlike Rikishi's heel turn, the writers had a field day with Al Snow and turned him heel. Like I said previously, the changed up his appearance, his attitude, his mannerisms, and most importantly, they made him seem like a legitimate threat.
It's such a shame they turned him back into the goofy Al Snow by February. I wish they legitimately had Al Snow challenge The Rock more and antagonize him because their feud was actually pretty good and they worked well together.
TL;DR: I LOVED heel Al Snow and I wished they used him for far more than a few times. I wish his feud with The Rock would have bled into The Rock and Triple H's feud for the WWF Heavyweight Championship.
