I don’t think it go over with the crowd though I would have loved to see them book a face Big Show vs heel Spike. It would have to be a squash though. He did try to get the crowd to boo him though. There is one match out there on YouTube where he faced the baby face Mark Jindrak (another person who I think like two fans cared about). One of the announcers perhaps jokingly say that Spike in intimidating. He also feuded with Rey Mysterious which had to be the only times where Rey had the size advantage (this of course contradicts what Jerry Lawler said in future WWE video games.)

It was weird seeing him boss around the other Dudley’s but it was my favorite Spike.

I liked the idea of the small unassuming guy secretly being this mob boss, it had legs

I hated this.
The Dudley Boyz taking orders from this skinny white guy was far too unbelievable. Their entire career they used to punk this guy out. Why are they so scared of him all of a sudden?
Spike played a good role in ECW and his early WWE days. Playing a "mob boss" or whatever wasn't one of those roles.

It didn’t help in kayfabe and IRL when the Dudleys were taken off the road.

Liked it a lot but it's something that had to last longer to have more of an impact.

I've always been a big Dudley's fan so seeing Spike get used as anything other than a jobber was cool. I didn't really like that Spike was bullying Bubba and D-Von all of a sudden. I thought it would have worked better if all 3 would have been presented as equals in a faction of deadly heels. Might have extended Bubba and D-Von's run too since they were taken off TV towards the end of 2004.

Really dumb for just how out of left field it was for every character involved.

I loved it. It really was refreshing for the Dudleys to turn heel then and Spike was great in the role.

I liked the idea of Spike in the Cruiserweight division. If they cared about giving them real storylines then they could have run with the idea that Spike had spent most of his career fighting men much larger than him. So now that he had to fight men his own size he would be not used to their speed and skill and would have to adjust his style to match. Even the heel turn with his brothers would work with this as you could make him unable to adapt so he has to resort to cheating to succeed.
But thats too much thought for a WWE creative team.

I’d argue it’s the most I’ve ever liked Spike. The scrappy underdog jobber was tired and like others have said I loved the unassuming ring leader archetype.
My only argument is it made little sense for Bubba and D’Von to suddenly start taking order from the runt of the family.

I really liked the idea, but the execution wasn’t the best. And using characters with a long established backstory didn’t help either because it felt forced.

I think if it was Spike with two other bigger wrestlers he was bossing around instead of Bubba and D’Von (explaining it away as Spike being sick of being left behind by his brothers), it would’ve worked better.
