How did Macho Man Randy Savage end up with that theme music? It suited him quite well and is one of the most legendary themes in wrestling history. However it's also absolutely tailor made for his brother The Genius. It fit his character perfectly.

I have to say it sounds completely off to Brits in particular, because it also gets used instead of God Save The Queen for a lot of sports events where the UK competes separately.

Wasn’t it a tribute to Gorgeous George ?

I hated WCW's electric guitar version.
I was only reminded recently that the first version of his WCW theme was pretty alright, and then they did the electric guitar version... yech.

There's conflicting reports, so the truth is somewhere between it starting as a homage to Gorgeous George and eventually it being an easily accessible piece of music inside any arena used in the territories and then it being a public domain composition in the 90s that he could take to WCW.

It used to be used as the “English National Anthem” for the commonwealth games as England doesn’t have a National Anthem (God Save the Queen is British). Recently though they switched to using Jerusalem as the anthem. When I think of Pomp and Circumstance I usually think of Last Night of the Proms.

Didnt they originally use the complete version before switching to the looped version?

His theme was played for my 1990 kindergarten graduation and I asked my family why his theme was being used. They told me it was the usual graduation theme, of course.

The context of classical music in wrestling is amazing. I could never not think about Savage when hearing Pomp or about the Bulldog when hearing Rule Britannia. On the other hand I always cringe when I hear Danielson coming out to Wagner.

I'm still baffled why Americans graduate to an English national anthem.
Whenever I watch a Savage entrance I can never stop myself singing they lyrics.

It's not just the U.S. that does it as other countries play it as well. The reason it's used is because when Edward Elgar received an honorary doctorate from Yale that section was played while the graduates received their diplomas and other colleges and eventually high schools began doing the same.

I just checked and Canada and the Philippines use it too. Odd. Did they not know it is a patriot English song?
