I'm glad they went quickly went back to the paint as I didn't think it was a good look and made them look even more like gimps however why was it so short lived?
They debuted the new look at the end of October and had it leading up to Survivor Series however at the event they showed up back in their old look with the paint and no masks at all not even their entrance leather ones with no explanation given. I'm guessing the reason to introduce the masks was because they realized how silly it was at Summerslam when they were switching with each other and trying to sell it that they looked so much alike when in reality they looked about as much alike as Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart. However even with the masks it was still easy to tell them apart with their different heights and body types as well as Smash and Crush having long hair coming out of the masks while Ax didn't.
During the Smash against Texas Tornado match at the Survivor Series Showdown they were also trying to put over that the masks also gave them some kind of protection against head blows. Heenan mentioned it on commentary and during the match punches and blows to Smash's head weren't having much effect. Just seemed weird that they would go through all the trouble of giving them a new look and then just scrap it after less then a month.

I barely remember this at all. I found one match on youtube against LOD with the masks. Yeah the face paint was a much better look for them.

It was probably so they could do a better job of switching places in 2-on-2 matches (after it looked so stupid at SummerSlam when the ref had to act like he couldn't tell Ax from Smash), then Ax gave notice.

I could be wrong but didn't the Survivor Series match graphics also show all 3 of them in the masks?
This was always funny to me because even as a 9 year old who had just started watching wrestling a few months prior I could easily tell the 3 apart. Especially since Smash had a giant (eagle?) tattoo on one of his arms that commentary would always try to ignore. Smash would try to cover it with an elbow pad sometimes but a minute into the match the pad always slid down around his elbow or forearm.
Vince has been insulting our intelligence for years. We were just less pessimistic about it back then. Lol

I half-wonder if they weren't also trying to make the LOD's face paint more special/exclusive by having Demolition switch to masks, even though they'd been wearing paint for 3 1/2 years. That seems like the kind of dumb thing Vince would briefly care about before realizing the masks didn't look good.

We were just less pessimistic about it back then. Lol It is odd management wanted him to keep the tattoo covered up so long. I get early on, fresh from JCP but in 89 and 90 Demolition was so popular Smash's previous character should have been long forgotten. Though I remember one of the only non WWF VHS tapes my video store had was the one with Krusher on the cover against Hawk. What is even stranger is him not having a sleeve of some sorts as Repo Man since it was obvious it was Smash based on the tattoo, among other things. When he first started as Smash he had paint on his upper arms which looked really stupid since it was just a big spot of paint. That's what I always figured.

I honestly don't hate the mask designs, but yeah, obviously the paint fit them better.

Maybe they just wanted to take a break from painting their faces.
Can you imagine the tedium of having to paint your face as often as they did?

In 2014 I was at an autograph convention and was in the bathroom at the same time as they were and saw them putting on the makeup. It was super cool to see. Ax really only does the trim around his eyes, no undercoat like he used to do with the silver. Smash does the full paint though.

I heard Animal once talk about how he painted his own face plus Hawk's and that was the first time I ever thought about what an arduous process that must be. I assumed someone did it for them or they had some kind of a mask they put on that applied it automatically, because it always looked symmetrically perfect.

Some of them get help, but it's usually done by the one wearing it just for practicality reasons. I do know Kamala didn't initially put his on, with I think Lawler initially doing it for him. I imagine Kamala likely learned to do it himself afterwards or got someone to do it for him.

After the first time he did it, Kamala asked him “Mr. Lawler, why did you paint a banana on my belly?”

I thought it looked weird and I’m glad they didn’t wear them for long. What’s funny is that when they revamped the Wrestling Challenge intro in November, there’s a clip of Demolition with the masks and it isn’t removed until a week or two after Wrestlemania VII when Demolition was basically finished.
