For male, it has to be Giannis. His entire playoff run was an all-timer. Then you take into account he was playing injured, that he stayed on a small market team that seemed to be stagnating, making clutch play after clutch play, and the way he carries himself. He's the antithesis of an NBA superstar in the ego department despite being the sport's biggest star rn.
For female, I'm sure many will disagree but I'd say Naomi Osaka. Went 1/2 in the grand slams that she actually competed for, is for my money the best women's tennis player in the game rn, and is making a very big stand for mental health in her sport and all sports.
Both are athletes at the top of their sport who are making big, positive contributions off the field of play as well.

Ohtani has to win this one on the male side. He literally did something no one has done in a century in a much more difficult environment. It was one of the best seasons in any sport for an individual player.
