Watching the December 28, 1991 episode of Superstars and there's a gem here I'd never seen that's worth checking out. Super rare face vs face match. The Rockers break-up had been slowly burning since February of this year, and this match being just a few weeks before the iconic Barbershop Window break-up I'd imagine kind of overshadows this. Still, great story being told and really emphasizes the strengths of both teams, and how the Rockers' timing just being slightly off leads to their downfall. Found it on YouTube for ya - www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4ZL_aN7gnQ

They start being just a little-bit off, and you see it really beginning to slowly bubble in the tag team battle royal prior to Wrestlemania.

I remember this match. Don't think I've seen it since it aired. I could be wrong but I don't think it's been released on any of the Shawn WWE dvd's they have released. Which is surprising given the talent involved.
I completely missed if they were teasing a break up between the Rockers. I don't remember noticing anything off between them until Survivor Series 91. By that point it was obvious where they were headed.

This is a great little gem, great find! It was interesting to see how well their different styles worked together.

They had a slight tease of dissension earlier in the year when Shawn accidentally dropkicked Marty over the top rope and caused them to get eliminated from the #1 Contender Tag Team battle royal for Wrestlemania VII that the Nasty Boys ended up winning. However Marty didn't act pissed at him or anything afterwards. So I don't know if they were planting seeds that far back or if it wasn't supposed to be anything. There wasn't any instances of them not getting along until they started laying it on thick it in the fall.

I just rewatched all of the 1991 Superstars, and they had a tension in their local spot promos for the house show loop with the Nasty Boys. It starts as them sort of together talking about how they need to get back to their winning ways, and from there they start to sound further frustrated but trying.

It starts as them sort of together talking about how they need to get back to their winning ways, and from there they start to sound further frustrated but trying. What time of the year was the promo? If it was early in the year that would be kind of odd to say they need to get back to their winning ways as they were actually doing pretty well around that time and it seemed like the only time the bookers were at least somewhat behind them. Back to back wins on PPV at Rumble 91 and Wrestlemania and they also got a DQ win over the Nasties who were champs at the time on Superstars in May although that was kind of pointless as LOD was clearly being groomed as the face team to be the next champions and even cut a inset promo during that match. So I guess it was just kind of bad timing for the Rockers who already had bad luck with them deciding not to air their title win over the Harts in the fall of 90 due to the rope breaking. Although I never understood why didn't just redo the match at the next TV taping. I guess Vince just changed his mind and decided it would be better on the Harts until they figured out a heel team they could decide on to transition it to LOD. I guess Power and Glory would've been the choice until the Nasties kind of fell on their lap.

The rope breaking was just happenstance. The reason the Rockers initially went over was Neidhart had been fired and they needed to get the titles off the Harts. A few days later - after the Rockers had already defended the titles a couple of times at house shows - Neidhart was brought back and the title change was ignored on TV, with the "broken rope invalidated the match" being fed to the dirt sheets for the benefit of those who knew about the title change.

I think breakup plans for the Rockers weren't even considered until Shawn and Marty had that real-life fight sometime in the middle of the year.

Apparently, and I just learned this watching a Cultaholic video, NBC cut SNME to 60 minutes and moved it to Friday when the show was supposed to air. That match was the easiest thing to remove with the rope break.

The match was apparently acknowledged on TV in the local market. WWF @ Ft. Wayne, IN - Allen County War Memorial Coliseum - October 30, 1990 Wrestling Challenge taping: Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty defeated WWF Tag Team Champions Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart in a Best 2 out of 3 falls match to win the titles at 25:01; fall #1 - Jannetty pinned Bret by blocking a sunset flip at 9:33; fall #2 - Hart pinned Michaels with the Hart Attack at 19:23; the move was heavily hampered by the fact the top rope had fallen down; the rope was reattached after the fall; fall #3 - Jannetty pinned Neidhart after Michaels prevented the Hart Attack and Jannetty fell on Neidhart for the win; after the bout, the Harts shook hands with the new champions and raised their hands; this match was never shown on television because the top rope fell off at around the 12-minute mark and Vince McMahon felt he could not air it; the titles were later returned to Hart & Neidhart and the title change was never mentioned aside from WWF President Jack Tunney officially reversing the decision of the match on TV stations in the immediate area; a clip of the finish of the 3rd fall were eventually shown in September 1995 prior to Jannetty's return to the WWF ( Shawn Michaels: Heartbreak & Triumph)

I wonder if that clip of Tunney reversing the title change is somewhere on youtube.

This is a great little gem, great find! It was interesting to see how well their different styles worked together. I had never saw this before. It's from one of the periods where I had temporarily stopped watching. It's interesting. It reinforces my 35 years and counting opinion that The Road Warriors should've faced The Rock N Roll Express in the first Crockett Cup, and depending on how it goes, maybe take it a step further. The Crockett Cup concept just begged for some quirky dream matches yet it never happened. At least two dream matches should've happened in that tournament... Road Warriors vs The Rock N Roll Express The Russians vs The Midnight Express
