Hey everybody!!
I hope everyone had a fantastic holiday weekend and that they received everything they asked for and wanted. Hugs and kisses to all of my lovies in this forum. I love each and every one of you!
I had a question about the Stephanie McMahon amnesia storyline. Were they trying to go anywhere with this? LOL.
Storylines in 1999 seemed to rear their ugly heads, just to be dropped a few weeks later for another silly plotline that was also subsequently dropped. They had the whole "Who was behind the GTV"? plot, which we never found out; the whole "Unholy Alliance" build that never went anywhere; the mysterious briefcase at King of the Ring 1999 and who kept lifting it from Austin's grasp; and the whole "Blonde Bitch Project". Things were introduced that went absolutely NOWHERE.
The whole Stephanie McMahon (almost Stephanie McMahon-Test/Stephanie McMahon-Martin) amnesia storyline fell victim to this.
Check it out: At the Rebellion 1999 PPV (which for some odd reason, I remember it being quite good, though I haven't seen it since 2000 and that was on a strange VHS that had everything handwritten on it), Bulldog was super pissed off for some inexplicable reason. He trashed Vince's kayfabe office and Vince and Stephanie walked in on him doing it. He got into Vince's face and began complaining to him about The Rock or some other such nonsense. When Vince asked him to leave, Davey Boy got super pissed and then hurled a trash can at Vince. Vince dodged it, however it (kayfabe AF) hit Steph. We didn't even see anything happen; we just heard the trash can hit the wall and both men looked behind them and the camera panned to the behind them and Stephanie was laid out on the floor with the trash can next to her. Davey Boy was somewhat remorseful, yet indignant, while Vince was freaking out. I think Shane came into the room at that point and started yelling at Bulldog.
Over the next few weeks, they hyped up this whole storyline of Stephanie not being able to remember anything. She couldn't remember Test, let alone her own family. I think at one point Linda was talking to her in the hospital and we got to see just how bad her amnesia was.
Test was extremely pissed (and rightfully so) and wanted Bulldog to catch his hands. On the other end of the spectrum was the The Rock, who, in his own little weird way, somewhat attempted to avenge Stephanie's assault at Bulldog's hands, as well as get his revenge on the fact that Bulldog interfered in his affairs with Triple H, who was the Heavyweight champ at the time.
Nearing the end of October 1999, The Rock defeated The British Bulldog at No Mercy, and Test and The British Bulldog squared up in a steel cage match. This was because Davey Boy never apologized to Stephanie about hitting her with that trash can. Test was super over with the crowd, but for the first third of the match, the crowd was dead. It wasn't until Test climbed the top of the cage, and The Mean Street Posse showed up, that the crowd came alive. Then there was Shane's spot of a diving cross body to Rodney and Pete Gas. Stephanie came out towards the end to make sure Test and Shane were okay.
I think later on Test teamed with Edge & Christian to take on The Mean Street Posse and The British Bulldog and Test, Edge, & Christian ended up victorious.
My main question is what the hell was the point of that storyline? Stephanie's memory ended up coming back, and just three weeks later, Mae Young and Moolah threw her a bachelorette party where her ass got lit as hell, and Triple H stole away with her, taking her to some quickie-Marriages-R-US drive thru spot where he spoke in her voice to get married to her.
All of that whole dramatic ass "Stephanie lost her memory and doesn't know who anyone is" bullcrap seemed very superfluous and unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. It would have been much different if it played out a bit longer and she rejected Test and Triple H had conned her into believing that she was with him all along, but the silly writers didn't even feel assed to do that. At the end of the day, if they wanted to go the route of "Triple H and Stephanie are breaking up" in kayfabe, let it be friggin Linda McMahon who dropped that dime and have done with it.
Again, I LOVE the Attitude Era as it has a lot of nostalgia for me (junior year of high school and all) and it is goddamn leaps and bounds better than the product now (I think last night I was flipping channels and I happened upon an episode of Raw, wherein a group of guys were turned backwards (so that their faces were pointed towards the Titantron and the entrance ramp) and moving to the ring lead by their asses; it was so bizarre and indescribable), but holy hell were the writers just falling asleep on the keyboard in 1999. I will say that 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2000 were probably the better years and 1999 was an extreme low point in the writing.
All this storyline did was prove how strong Test and Stephanie's love was, and was hyped up beyond bounds, similar to Cam Newton's return to the Panthers (Ugh). It turned Test into a fan favorite (which was negated by forming T & A with Albert and Trish and they turned heel), as well as made the audience sympathize with Stephanie McMahon (which was also negated when she revealed that she was aligned with Triple H all along), and made Shane McMahon babyface (again, until sided with Big Show during Big Show and The Rock's whole kerfuffle over who was the clear winner of Royal Rumble 2000). It was pretty pointless.
