Today in Ring of Honor History: May 22 - 2004: Ring of Honor held "Generation Next" in Philadelphia, PA. With ROH still revamping itself after the Rob Feinstein Controversy, the show was supposed to feature eight young wrestlers competing in four randomly selected singles match, with the fans voting on who impressed them the most, and chosen wrestlers being booked full time. However, Alex Shelley, Austin Aries, Roderick Strong and Jack Evans hijacked the show and put an end to that, refusing to let their fate be left up to the fans. Taking the show's name as their own, they vowed to simply take the spots of other wrestlers on the roster, and quickly went to work establishing themselves as a dominant force. After defeating Special K at the start of the show (which started Hydro's transition from rich kid raver to pro wrestler Jay Lethal), they made their presence felt throughout the remainder of the night, culminating in an Eight-Man Tag Team match against John Walters, Jimmy Rave and the Briscoe Brothers. Generation Next wasn't the only new team on the scene, as the mystery of who crapped in the Carnage Crew's bags ["At Our Best" - 3/13/04] came to a close when it was revealed to be Masada and Danny Daniels, who branded themselves The New and Improved Carnage Crew. Elsewhere, after having a fireball thrown in his face during their last encounter ["Reborn: Stage One" - 4/23/04], ROH World Champion Samoa Joe wanted revenge against Homicide, and got it when the rules were relaxed during their rematch for the title. With the show having to be held outside in a tent, Homicide made good use of the venue, resulting in some of the most memorable calls from Gabe "Jimmy Bower" Sapolsky's career on commentary. One week after defeating the Second City Saints for the ROH Tag Team Championship at "Round Robin Challenge III" [5/15/04], The Prophecy looked to repeat the feat in a No Disqualification match. Not done for the night, CM Punk followed up the title match by recreating an icon Randy Savage moment during a confrontation with Ricky Steamboat. - 2010: ROH wrapped up their latest round of HDNet tapings in Philadelphia, PA. The feud between El Generico and Kevin Steen continued to burn hot. After taking on Steve Corino in a singles match, Colt Cabana teamed up with Generico to face Steen and Corino in an "Anything Goes" match. Looking to prove the greatness of the ROH World Tag Team Champions the Kings of Wrestling, Shane Hagadorn setup a series of tag matches, one of which included Adam Cole in his ROH debut, but they ended up biting off more than they could chew when The Briscoes took the place of the last team. ROH World Champion Tyler Black teamed with Jerry Lynn and Delirious to face Austin Aries and The All-Night Express in a grudge match. With both teams at one win a piece, The American Wolves and Dark City Fight Club met in a rubber match. One night after teaming together, Christopher Daniels squared off against Roderick Strong, who had a new life intervention expert, Truth Martini. Rasche Brown took on Embassy member Erick Stevens in a grudge match, while The Embassy's new Crown Jewel Necro Butcher wrestled his first match for them, a squash against Bobby Beverly. Andy Ridge was the latest victim of ROH World Television Champion Eddie Edwards' Ten Minute Hunt, Sara Del Rey took on Jamilia Craft (Jenny Rose), and Up in Smoke faced The Set.

The GenNext show was one of the first shows I remember watching on tape from ROH and it got me hooked. I really liked the Joe/Homicide and Steamboat/CM Punk feuds.

Today in Ring of Honor History: May 31 - 2003: Ring of Honor held "Do or Die" in Philadelphia, PA. The only "Do or Die" that was a main show, the show featured new wrestlers trying to impress the fans and management, as well as established stars trying out new roles. CM Punk had a busy night, as he not only wrestled a Four Corner Survival match against Christopher Daniels and the debuting Frankie Kazarian and Jimmy Rave, but also teamed with Colt Cabana to face the Briscoe Brothers, Carnage Crew and Special K, as well as beginning his tenure as commentator on the DVDs. In addition to being his first ROH match against Rave, the Four Corner Survival also started laying the groundwork for the eventual feud between the Second City Saints and The Prophecy. While Rave walked away with a regular spot in ROH, Kazarian did not, and it'd be eleven years before he was brought in again. Future ROH Pure Champion John Walters made his debut against Andy Anderson, and Tony Mamaluke returned after a six month absence to face Jason Cross. Homicide received his first shot at the ROH World Championship, but lost when Samoa Joe debuted a new finisher, the Muscle Buster (which thankfully he modified to a safer version). Like CM Punk, both were busy that night, as Joe continued the feud between The Group and The Prophecy by attacking Dan Maff in the locker and fighting with Christopher Daniels after the show, while Homicide's feud with Trent Acid spilled over from CZW. Before being attacked backstage, Maff wrestled his future tag team partner BJ Whitmer, and set the stage for his future showdown against Low Ki at "Bitter Friends, Stiffer Enemies" [8/16/03]. Acid teamed with his Backseat Boyz partner Johnny Kashmere to face Special K's Jody Fleisch and Slim J in the continuation of their angle from "The Epic Encounter" [4/12/03]. And Matt Stryker scored a shocking win over the king of the independents, "Reckless Youth" Tom Carter. - 2013: After months of relentless bullying from the Ring of Honor fans, a distraught Matt Hardy released an emotional anti-bullying video online.

I vividly remember the day that Matt Hardy video dropped, probably the first spark of him getting back in the greater wrestling community's favor.
Also, the Kazarian match on that 2003 show I believe was Kazarian's only match with ROH until Daniels brought him along for his return. I remember that four-way being on Daniel's second ROH comp (in the single disc original DVD era) and a pretty fun match.

Eddie Edwards defeated Matt Taven in a Proving Ground match to earn a future shot at the ROH World Television Championship. ROH World Tag Team Champion Kyle O'Reilly faced Mike Sydal, while his partner Bobby Fish took on Raymond Rowe in his debut match. The ROH/S.C.U.M. war saw Mark Briscoe wrestle Steve Corino in an impromptu match, while BJ Whitmer and Michael Elgin teamed up against Jimmy Jacobs and Rhett Titus in a Tornado Tag Team match. Jay Lethal faced hometown hero ACH, Adam Cole and Roderick Strong added another match in their history against each other, and Athena took on Barbi Hayden. - 2019: ROH debuted in the Pacific Northwest with a television taping in Kent, WA. Today in Ring of Honor History: June 2 - 2018: Ring of Honor held a television taping in New York, NY. Ultimo Guerrero and Titan made the trip from CMLL to participate, with Guerrero taking on Matt Taven in a rematch from a year prior [Ep. #303 - taped 6/24/17], and Titan facing Cody. It was a night of Six-Man action, as The Young Bucks and Adam Page of Bullet Club teamed up to face the ROH World Tag Team Champions The Briscoe and Punishment Martinez in the main event of the first episode, while the fourth episode was largely dedicated to a Gauntlet match to determine the number one contenders for the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Championship, with the makeshift team of Kenny King, Chuck Taylor and Eli Isom defeating SoCal Uncensored to get the title shot. King and Taylor pulled double duty on the tapings, with Taylor also facing Jay Lethal in a singles match, while King took on Jonathan Gresham in their only singles match together in ROH. Cheeseburger continued his feud with Bully Ray, meeting him in a No Disqualification match. WOH World Champion Sumie Sakai teamed up with Stella Grey against Gabby Ortiz and Riley Shepard, Jenny Rose faced Kelly Klein, and Josh Woods took on Façade. - 2019: ROH closed out their first and only tour in the Pacific Northwest with "State of the Art 2019" in Portland, OR. The main event saw the return of the Defy or Deny match, with Matt Taven taking on Flip Gordon, Mark Haskins, and ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champion PCO. The Bouncers won a shot at the ROH World Tag Team Championship after winning a Gauntlet match involving Coast 2 Coast, The Kingdom, the Varos Twins, Silas Young and ROH World Television Champion Shane Taylor, and the wild card team of Dalton Castle and Rush. Former rivals Jay Lethal and Jay Briscoe found themselves squaring off one more time. Mark Briscoe faced Josh Woods, Jeff Cobb took on PJ Black, and Tracy Williams accepted Bully Ray's open challenge. The most notable part of the show, however, did not take place in front of the camera, but backstage. After a Women of Honor match between Mazzerati and Danika Della Rouge, The Allure came out for their usual heel shtick. While they were out there, Velvet Sky, backed up by Mandy Leon, got into an altercation with a fan, who was subsequently escorted backstage on orders of Bully Ray. The resulting He Said/She Said led to an internal investigation from ROH, with Sky (as far as I know) not being seen on Ring of Honor shows again. - 2021: On Women's Division Wednesday, Willow and Alex Garcia made their debuts, facing each other in a singles match.

On a much lighter note, I was oblivious to the whole situation being on commentary and enjoyed a great night that involved walking around Portland with Colt, getting Voodoo Donuts, and accidentally walking into a drive through/walk-in, pop-up gentleman's club that was next to Voodoo at the time.
Colt also is like a bazillion miler on United and I rarely fly United so he got me into the lounge that next morning and I had lots of free peanuts.

Today in Ring of Honor History: June 3 - 2006: Ring of Honor held "Destiny" in East Windsor, CT. The rivalry between Homicide and Bryan Danielson was renewed when Homicide challenged for the ROH World Championship for the first time in nine months. Homicide was seemingly the savior of ROH after coming to their aid against CZW at "Ring of Homicide" [5/13/06], but when the referee stopped the match for his safety, Homicide snapped after feeling like he'd been screwed out of the title yet again, and appeared to reach his breaking point with the promotion. With the threat of Homicide seemingly dealt with, Danielson turned his attention to his next big threat, Samoa Joe, attacking him when he came out to help calm down Homicide (who was trying to destroy the referee for stopping the match). Surprisingly that match wasn't the main event, with that spot instead going to The Briscoes again challenging Generation Next for the ROH Tag Team Championship in a rematch from "Ring of Homicide". That match ended up being the last stand for GeNext, as with Jack Evans busy competing internationally and Matt Sydal off doing his own thing, Aries disbanded the group and dropped the "Generation Next" name, saying from now on it's just Austin Aries and Roderick Strong. Colt Cabana continued his climb back up the mountain following his five minute loss at "The 100th Show", defeating Adam Pearce, Delirious and Jason Blade in a Four Corner Survival match to earn another shot at the ROH World Championship. After their first match was interrupted by a CZW invasion at the "Fourth Anniversary Show" [2/25/06], former Prophecy members Christopher Daniels and BJ Whitmer met in a rematch to finally settle their issues with each other. Dragon Gate wrestler Shingo Takagi made his return, facing Ricky Reyes of The Rottweilers, who went 0-2 for the night. Also having an unsuccessful night was The Embassy, with Jimmy Rave losing to the debuting Davey Richards, while Daizee Haze lost to the debuting Sara Del Rey. And Shane Hagadorn defeated Derek Dempsey to become the new Top of the Class Trophy holder. - 2016: ROH kicked off the "Road to Best in the World 2016" tour in Collinsville, IL. The main event saw ROH World Champion Jay Lethal team up with ROH World Tag Team Champions The Addiction to face his upcoming challenger Jay Briscoe and the former tag champs War Machine in a Six-Man Tag Team match. Stevie Richards made his return, competing in a Four Corner Survival match against Moose, Roderick Strong and Silas Young. With the countdown on to Steve Corino and BJ Whitmer finally meeting in the ring, Colby Corino made his return, looking for a measure of revenge on Whitmer for the beating he gave him back in January [ROH TV: Ep. #228 - taped 1/9/16]. Kamaitachi faced his biggest test thus far in his Ring of Honor excursion, taking on former ROH World Champion Adam Cole. Chris Sabin faced Adam Page in a No Disqualification match, while his partner Alex Shelley wrestled their future ally Lio Rush. The All-Night Express squared off against the returning Shane Taylor and Keith Lee. Set to face Silas Young at the pay-per-view [6/24/16], ACH first had to contend with Young's friend Beer City Bruiser. Mark Briscoe wrestled Jason Kincaid, Dalton Castle took on Caprice Coleman, and Taeler Hendrix faced Jessica James. - 2017: ROH held "Road to Best in the World 2017" in Chicago Ridge, IL. The event was Ring of Honor's last in the Frontier Fieldhouse, ROH's Chicago home for thirteen years. The first half the show was recorded for television, while the second half was released as a VOD. In the TV taping, The Young Bucks successfully defended the ROH World Tag Team Championship against Coast 2 Coast and The Tempura Boyz in a Three-Way match, before also defending it against Cheeseburger and Will Ferrara on the main show. After their unsuccessful challenge, the partnership of Cheeseburger and Ferrara came to an end when Ferrara attacked his partner after months of frustration. Kenny King won a future shot at the ROH World Television Championship by defeating Beer City Bruiser, Chris Sabin and Mark Briscoe in a Four Corner Survival match. Jay White faced Punishment Martinez in a rematch from "Masters of the Craft" [4/29/16], continuing their feud. Bobby Fish took on Silas Young, Jay Briscoe faced Josh Woods, and Jonathan Gresham wrestled Flip Gordon in their first match against each other. On the main show, ROH World Champion Christopher Daniels teamed with his partner Frankie Kazarian to face his upcoming challenger Cody and his Bullet Club teammate Adam Page. Bully Ray took on Matt Taven in a Street Fight, Colt Cabana wrestled Vinny Marseglia, Jay Lethal faced Caprice Coleman, and Dalton Castle teamed with The Boys against The Rebellion.

Today in Ring of Honor History: June 4 - 2005: Ring of Honor held "New Frontiers" in Williamsville, NY. In a role reversal from "Stalemate" [4/16/05], Spanky challenged Austin Aries for the ROH World Championship, while James Gibson challenged for the ROH Pure Championship, now held by Samoa Joe. Rounding out the title matches, BJ Whitmer and Jimmy Jacobs defended the ROH Tag Team Championship against The Ring Crew Express, who despite being "the top tag team in Ring of Honor" since 2002, were challenging for the titles for only the second time. With his own feud over, CM Punk helped Colt Cabana with his, teaming with him to face Nigel McGuinness and Chad Collyer in a grudge match. Also continuing their feud, Alex Shelley and Roderick Strong met in a rematch from "The Final Showdown" [5/13/05]. After serving the Carnage Crew's 90-day suspension ["Third Anniversary Celebration: Part 1" - 2/19/03], Loc made his return, taking on Cheech of Lacey's Angels. In a match that would be a bigger deal years later, Homicide faced Kevin Steen for the first time in ROH. And Davey Andrews won a Three-Way match over Shane Hagadorn and The New York City Masked Superstar. - 2016: ROH continued the "Road to Best in the World 2016" tour in Indianapolis, IN. The main event saw the Motor City Machine Guns take on Adam Cole and Adam Page of Bullet Club. ROH World Champion Jay Lethal wrestled Mark Briscoe in a non-title match, while his upcoming challenger Jay Briscoe faced Moose. Former ROH World Tag Team Champions War Machine split up to face the reigning champs in singles matches, with Hanson taking on Frankie Kazarian, while Rowe delt with Christopher Daniels. Dalton Castle teamed up with Stevie Richards against The All-Night Express. Kamaitachi scored his biggest victory thus far into his ROH tenure, winning a Six Man Mayhem match over ACH, Jason Kincaid, Lio Rush, Roderick Strong and Will Ferrara. Silas Young and Beer City Bruiser took on Shane Taylor and Keith Lee, Cheeseburger faced Caprice Coleman, BJ Whitmer wrestled Matt Sells, and Kelly Klein squared off against Jessica James. - 2017: ROH held "Gateway to Gold" in Collinsville, IL. The show featured a 10-Man Gauntlet match, with the winner challenging Christopher Daniels for the ROH World Championship. However, when the final match between Jay White and Punishment Martinez ended in a draw, Daniels decided to take on both of them in a Three-Way match. The Motor City Machine Guns found themselves once against taking on Bullet Club's Adam Page, this time teaming with Cody (as Adam Cole had sadly been killed). After a false start a few months earlier, Bobby Fish made his final appearing before departing for NXT, facing Jay Lethal. ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champions Bully Ray and Mark Briscoe teamed up against Silas Young and Beer City Bruiser, while their partner Jay Briscoe went solo against Shane Taylor. Frankie Kazarian wrestled Flip Gordon, and Coast 2 Coast took on The Rebellion. - 2021: ROH aired their latest episode of television from Baltimore, MD. Today in Ring of Honor History: June 5 - 2015: Ring of Honor continued the "Road to Best in the World 2015" tour in Collinsville, IL. The main event saw ROH World Champion Jay Briscoe team up with Roderick Strong to face Michael Elgin and Moose. The match was a warmup for the pay-per-view [6/19/15], as Elgin, Strong and Moose were scheduled to meet in a Three-Way match to determine the new number one contender for the ROH World Championship. ROH World Television Champion Jay Lethal took on Rowe in a non-title match. Rowe's partner Hanson took on Matt Taven of The Kingdom, with his partner Michael Bennett taking on Dalton Castle. Hometown heroes and longtime friends/rivals Delirious and Matt Sydal teamed up to face ROH World Tag Team Champions The Addiction in a non-title match. Mark Briscoe took on Adam Page, BJ Whitmer wrestled The Romantic Touch, and Cheeseburger tried to hold his own against Silas Young. - 2016: Ring of Honor continued the "Road to Best in the World 2016" tour in Columbus, OH. While one year before they were teaming together, the main event this time saw Jay Briscoe and Roderick Strong facing in a singles match, their last ever against each other. In another coincidence match, one year after taking on Silas Young, Cheeseburger took on Young's partner Beer City Bruiser. Two nights after facing each other in a Six-Man Tag Team match, and one night after dual singles match, former ROH World Tag Team Champions War Machine and the reigning champions The Addiction met in a rematch for the titles, this time No Disqualification. However, War Machines efforts to reclaim the belts were thwarted thanks to Shane Taylor and Keith Lee. ROH World Champion Jay Lethal took Bullet Club's Adam Page in a non-title match. Today in Ring of Honor History: June 6 - 2008: Ring of Honor held "Up for Grabs" in Hartford, CT. With Mark Briscoe out injured, The Briscoes' fifth reign as ROH World Tag Team Champions came to an end as they were forced to vacate the titles. An eight-team tournament took place to crown the new champions, with The Age of the Fall defeating Kevin Steen and El Generico in the finals to become champions for the second time. Also participating in the tournament: the No Remorse Corps, The Vulture Squad, Chris Hero and Adam Pearce of Sweet n' Sour, Inc., ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness and Go Shiozaki, Austin Aries and Bryan Danielson, and Delirious and Pelle Primeau. Despite the tournament format, there was still room for storyline development. After being screwed in his two previous attempts at the ROH World Championship, Steen and McGuinness met in the opening round. And Austin Aries' hatred of Jimmy Jacobs led to him getting his team disqualified thirty seconds into the second round. In non-tournament action, Erick Stevens won a Three-Way match over Brent Albright and Necro Butcher, Claudio Castagnoli took on Sweet n' Sour, Inc. member Eddie Edwards, and Shane Hagadorn faced Alex Payne. - 2014: ROH held "Road to Best in the World 2014: Night One" in Carbondale, IL. Today in Ring of Honor History: June 7 - 2008: Ring of Honor taped "Respect Is Earned II" for pay-per-view in Philadelphia, PA. Celebrating one year of PPV, the show also seemingly marked the moments when Gabe Sapolsky said "screw it" on the continuity. While the first six PPV's can be watched on their own with natural story progression from one show to the next, this one was built almost entirely off of storylines from the regular shows. The main event saw new ROH World Tag Team Champions The Age of the Fall make their first defense in a heated contest against Austin Aries and Bryan Danielson (despite having no interaction on the previous PPVs). Nigel McGuinness defended the ROH World Championship against Go Shiozaki. Erick Stevens and Roderick Strong met in a Fight Without Honor, which if you'd been paying attention to ROH fulltime was a blowoff to a heated feud that went all the way back to The Resistance vs. No Remorse Corps, but if you'd just been watching the pay-per-views was a hardcore match that came from out of nowhere. One of the most notable moments from the show didn't make it to either the pay-per-view or DVD, when after the match Davey Richards turned on Strong to join Sweet n' Sour, Inc., ending the No Remorse Corps. Richards, for his part on the show, took on Claudio Castagnoli in an exhibition match, while Sweet n' Sour, Inc. had to deal with former member Brent Albright, who teamed with Delirious and Pelle Primeau against Chris Hero, Eddie Edwards, and Adam Pearce, who Sweeney finally got ROH to recognize as the NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Jigsaw pulled double duty on the taping, first teaming with Ruckus against Kevin Steen and El Generico in a match for the PPV, and then taking on Eddie Kingston in a DVD bonus match to end the mini-feud between The Vulture Squad and BLK OUT. In the other bonus match, Jay Briscoe and Necro Butcher once against met in a violent brawl, this time a Street Fight. And before the show, Rhett Titus defeated Ernie Osiris to become the new (and last) holder of the Top of the Class Trophy. - 2014: ROH held "Road to Best in the World: Night Two" in Collinsville, IL. In their last stop before their big showdown on pay-per-view [6/22/14], Adam Cole defended the ROH World Championship against Tommaso Ciampa, while his upcoming challenger Michael Elgin took on Cole's friend and ally Michael Bennett. Elgin ended the show with less hair than he started with, as Cole and Bennett cut off his trademarked mullet. In the main event, The Briscoes challenged reDRagon for the ROH World Tag Team Championship. Matt Taven earned a future shot at the ROH World Television Championship by defeating Jay Lethal in a Proving Ground match. Cedric Alexander took on Decade young boy Tadarius Thomas, while his former partner Caprice Coleman faced BJ Whitmer. ACH wrestled Silas Young, and Ethan Gabriel Owens squared off Zizou Middoux.
