Aha. Do any of the characters actually make an appearance? Or is it just a fleeting reference? the main cast of the movie are members the Vampiric Council, they then pop up in every season for 1 or 2 episodes. Viago during the first appearances addresses the film crew and kind of notes its the same film crew following these vampires now. and speaking of Vampires, the movie version of Dark Shadows was way more gory and changed up the Barnabas story a bit, and then the Tim Burton film was also really different from the Dark Shadows tv show. I need to get back to the first half of S1 when I get a chance! Were they seen in this past season at all? I forget. (and if they were from New Zealand, I doubt it due to It Which Must Not Be Named 19)

Taika was also in a video sent to them about being the heads of the Council now, IIRC.

Over the years there have been a whack of movies based on TV shows. Some that are very different. Some that come to mind are Pee Wee's Big adventure and Big top Pee Wee were nothing like Pee Wee's Playhouse. I know right cause Pee Wee actually slept with someone in Big Top Pee Wee

the nearly-forgotten Legends of the Superheroes TV movies from 1979, which reunited Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman and Robin, make the old Batman show look like the Snyder Cut. It makes a decent show look like unwatchable garbage?

Now that I know about both version I must backtrack.

There's a clerks TV show? yeah not sure if it got out of the pilot stage, but it starred Jim Bruer. Kevin Smith had nothing to do with it. IIRC Brian O'Halloran auditioned to reprise Dante and was told he wasn't right for the part.

Having not seen enough of either to truly judge: Isn't the original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" movie laced with a more comedic edge than the later TV series?
