I'm certain I may have asked this way back in the day, but my memory sucks.
I noticed that the Wrestling Observer used to have multiple categories of awards, which were divided into two distinct tiers; the "A" tier and the "B" tier. "A" tier awards were awards that were front and center for the sheet to focus on and have fans pick who was the cream of the crop the past year, such as Best Wrestler, Best Match, Best Promotion, and so forth. "B" tier awards, however, were more random, and often were less desirable awards, often highlighting fan disgust, such as Worst Wrestler, Worst Promotion, Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic, and so on. Mr. Fuji was the undisputed king of bad managers, according to this process, having won Worst Manager 11 times.
I noticed that, according to Wikipedia, after 2003, many of the "B" tier awards, and all of the Worst awards were dropped. Now, I don't have a premium subscription to the Observer archives because I'm a poor bastard who struggles to make ends meet and can't look back at the archives, and I sent an e-mail to the website inquiring about this change, but didn't get anywhere, nor has anyone over on the Blog of Doom gotten back to me about this. I assume they were retired due to the lack of interest or the negativity surrounding these categories, which in today's internet (the awards were done back when the internet was in its infancy and 2003 was right around the start of what is called "Web 2.0"), would only be further amplified, and how the WrestleCrap Gooker of the Year Award has gone from "stupidest shit imaginable" to "booking decisions we hated", I can understand this. That being said, I wished these could still be voted on given that bad stuff in wrestling still happens, although I can probably assume that anyone who gets the "Worst Wrestler" award would likely take offense or go the Bruce Pritchard route.
Was there an official reason for the retirement of these awards given by Meltzer?
