"Punishment" is probably the wrong word as I don't think Vince did it to be petty or send a message. I think he just genuinely felt NXT had failed at it's original goal of producing stars for Raw and SmackDown, and so he decided to bring it back to basics with younger guys developed in-house being the focus. It didn’t generate stars because the booking for the main roster is horrendous Yeah, they had people that were plenty over... hell Finn Balor was the most over person on the show the day he was drafted to Raw and he didn't even appear. the main roster booking people into oblivion was the problem.

I personally think Black and Gold NXT would still exist if it went to FS1 as originally planned. The reason it didn't? Try and kill AEW and suck its ratings away before it can even start, and that failed.
So you can't tell me it didn't at least play a part in the rebranding that they lost both the sprint and the marathon in the end.

If it’s not 100% the reason, it’s a big, big factor.
HHH was the fall guy for Vince underestimating AEW.

Honestly I think the real road to growth in wrestling is through trying to become more engrained in nerd culture. There's a lot of overlap between the appeal of wrestling and the appeal of shit like comic books and shonen anime.

It's 2022 can we stop talking about the mythical "Casual fan" ... they don't exist... you shouldn't be banking your success on people THAT MIGHT accidentally stumble on your product... and work towards... like pleasing the people that you already have as fans, especially when you aren't retaining them... If they focus on putting out a better product for new fans, then the current ones will also be satisfied with their efforts. Wrestling needs a boom again. They should be working on making that happen instead of sitting back, collecting Saudi money and going through the motions every week. Ratings are at an all time low because they stopped caring. It's almost like they don't want wrestling to be big again. AEW are growing and a large reason for that is because it's adult orientated. There's blood, LONG TERM STORYTELLING***, (most important) and a feeling of "What's gonna happen next?"... WWE are missing all of those things. AEW isn't perfect. I definitely think there's a few things they could stop doing to attract even more fans but it's miles ahead of WWE right now. Eventually they will overtake them in the ratings.

So I read a quote from a recent Scotty 2 Hotty interview where he said about a month after Vince got more involved the trainers were told that Vince wanted them to look younger so he and other trainers were told they needed to dye their hair and beards to look young

NXT was not working as developmental. They were not hiring and developing wrestlers that Vince wanted. There needed to be more communication between NXT and WWE creative to build the wrestlers into Vince style superstars.
I have to wonder if Trip thought Vince would have retired or left to be full time XFL owner by now so Trip was getting his people ready to take over WWE. And when that didnt happen Trip was faced with having spent a lot of time and money on people Vince didnt want.

Was it losing to AEW? Was it the NXT global expansion falling through? Was it his pr handling of the pandemic? I'm not sure but it went from there being a clear succession plan to hand the reigns to Triple H and Stephanie to all of his people being removed, and Steph being strictly on the cooperate side so something happened that changed plans

I'm not sure but it went from there being a clear succession plan to hand the reigns to Triple H and Stephanie to all of his people being removed, and Steph being strictly on the cooperate side so something happened that changed plans As mentioned in another thread I think Steph plan is politics. That would be why she left creative for PR. To rehab WWE and by extension her image so when she runs she wont have to distance herself as much from WWE. When they try to bring out the Trish barking footage like they did with Linda she can counter with all their charitable work. Triple H is a mystery. A decade ago it seemed like they were moving quickly on Trips taking over. Its said that Trips would get rid of Vince loyalists like Dunn so maybe those guys have spent that time trashing Trips over and over eroding Vinces confidence. And my theory on Vince and Trip now is that since his last chance of non wrestling success, the XFL 2.0 failed he wants to push WWE to be as financially successful as possible to get some mainstream respect. So Vince sees Trip as a wrestling guy, not a business or entertainment guy. So someone Vince could have let take over his wrestling company but not his new business empire. Vince will let guys like Khan do whatever they want as long as it makes him money then sell it all when he can get a Marvel or Lucasfilm style deal with a big media company. Then he can finally feel like a big man.
