It's like Robert Galbraith, only I feel like WWE probably did this on accident.

What makes this funny (not really) but worse is that there is no f***ing way for them to try and spin this because apparently IT IS THE FIRST RESULT YOU SEE WHEN YOU GOOGLE THE NAME!!
So yea WWE very quick and sound advise....he remains WALTER and you do not ever f***ing aknowledge this ever ever ever.
But WWE aint smart and are gonna double if not triple down on this.

So can we just never say "WWE can't screw this person up" again? Cause the second WALTER announced a full US run, they screwed him up... No. I mean cool if you wanna stick your hand in the fire again, but I just have to wonder if you'll eventually be sick of being burned.

I think in general, it’s probably because the average person isn’t that well-versed on the individual people that were involved with the Nazis other than Hitler. Everyone knows the main guy. You might get a fair amount who know about Goebbels, Goering and Himmler, but after that it starts getting a bit patchy for the average person. They won’t know about Gunther Stark the U-Boat captain. If you type that name into google the Nazi Uboat guy is the 1st result...it would have taken 5 seconds to nix that name and do a different one. I know that, I did the Googling myself when the news came out. But being the first result on a Google search doesn’t mean it was pre-existing common knowledge. That was my point. There were 4712 German U-boats used in the second World War. What were the actual odds of picking a first name/last name combination that gets you the captain of one of them? They should’ve done their due diligence if they were so insistent on changing the name.

But how do you even get so far as to trademark that and bring any bit of it to TV? Even just going with Gunther, the NXT will more than likely know what the original plan was. I'm not even trying to shit on the idea of a name change, just goes do you get this far with that name? I think in general, it’s probably because the average person isn’t that well-versed on the individual people that were involved with the Nazis other than Hitler. Everyone knows the main guy. You might get a fair amount who know about Goebbels, Goering and Himmler, but after that it starts getting a bit patchy for the average person. They won’t know about Gunther Stark the U-Boat captain. Agreed but I'd think common practice would be to at least put the names in Google before getting as far as they have. Try and make sure there is no one or thing with that name to avoid having these mistakes. Like was said, this isn't even a first for them.

I agree with the sentiment that WWE should know better, they're a billion dollar company and they can't do one f***ing background check on a name? Not one singular google? Even if they just go with GUNTHER in the end, they still trademarked that with intent and still called him GUNTHER off that intent
They're either horrifically ignorant or f***ing stupid, neither boat is fantastic to land in

They’ll change the name Imperium to Anschluss next. Nah, they'll change it to the Reich. And it will last for what feels like a thousand years.

Hasn’t it been speculated in the past that Dolph Ziggler’s name is a reference to Adolph Ziegler, who was in charge of censoring art under the Nazis?

It's Tony Stark's German half-brother - Iron Cross Man.

What makes you think they didn’t Google it? How close are we to someone just out-and-out saying “WWE are Nazis”?

Try and make sure there is no one or thing with that name to avoid having these mistakes. Like was said, this isn't even a first for them. Yes. I can confirm as a professional writer that yes, you should always double check a little bit on names for characters. That's really basic stuff. Even just to avoid any issues of characters in existing media of any note that just happens to be one of your blind spots because you don't want to name the mob boss of your crime drama Dominic Toretto because it turns out you never saw any of the Fast & Furious movies. Or in this case, you accidentally drop a name that turns out to be for someone notable in history for doing some really awful shit. That's a very reasonable safeguard that takes only a minute of cursory googling at worst and just makes everything a lot easier. I can think in particular of a case that floats around writing circles as a cautionary tale where a villain in a book was a '60s cabaret singer in London named Tony Rocco. Except there was a real Tony Rocco who was a cabaret singer in London in the '60s, and there was a successful lawsuit over it. Due diligence is a highly encouraged thing in professional settings like this entirely because you can be playing with fire and doing so in a high profile enough setting to be caught doing it. This is standard practice as all hell and WWE not doing it is the real f***-up here, not the lack of firsthand knowledge of minor WW2 figures.

There was Brockenman and Brocken Jr. Brockenman was a Nazi who was defeated and killed by Ramenman, who, in the anime, also ate him, but I forget if he did in the manga or not. Brocken Jr. also has Nazi iconography with his costume but becomes a good guy and I guess isn't a Nazi?? Anyway, he after he tries to get revenge, he makes peace with Ramenman turning his father into noodles and devouring him, and sticks around for the whole series as one of the main character's stalwart allies. It's kinda weird. Unrelated, but one of the biggest bad guys in the series is Hulk Hogan, but British.
