Friends already did this gag. When Joey decided to change his stage name to Stalin, remember? Oh, its not a gag. That was a solid gag

I also have to wonder about what Walter Hahn himself thinks about all this. First thing to keep in mind is he's not actually German, he's Austrian, a country that was annexed by the Nazis in the leadup to the second World War. Dude probably would've gone his whole life having been educated about the evils that were wrought by that party and how that affected his home nation and the rest of the world. He has his successful wrestling career, the vast majority of it under his real name, and then he finally commits himself to a full-time run in the United States. Then they're like "You'll be working under this name" or "Give us a list of names to help us choose your new one", and you know, it is what it is... And then its probably brought to his attention that the one they are (were?) going with just happened to match 1:1 with a WWII Nazi U-boat captain on the very first Google search. He'd probably be utterly mortified. And I'd assume Barthel and Aichner would be too, because this situation affects the fortunes of Imperium as a whole. Imperium (and its indy predecessor Ringkampf) have always had to skirt these kinds of whispers about being some kind of Nazi-ish allegory because of their elitist and vaguely militant presentation, but they're gonna turn into full-on screams because of this, even if they only use the first name, everyone now knows what that first name is linked to. Even if they change literally NOTHING ELSE about the act. Shut the hell up or they'll hear and make him a Von Trapp. Actually that would probably be an improvement. HE HITS THE EDELWEISS!!!!!

Bild online regularly posts about wrestling with little to no research. This will not be part of the printed version. And yes: Bild is a cesspool and only became worse during the last two years.

It's Tony Stark's German half-brother - Iron Cross Man. I know Triple H is unpopular with the McMahons right now but I don't think they're going to be renaming him too.

I realize that this isn't that silly of a matter, but I've been disconnected enough from WWE that I actually laughed at how almost petulant WALTER sounded when he said his new name was GOONTHA. Still put on a banger with Strong though.

Just ignoring the nazi connections, it’s a horrible name for a one named wrestler. You can debate if WALTER is a good name, but it’s better than GUNTHER. To me, that’s not a name you associate with wanting to buy a ticket to see a Wrestlemania main event of Roman Reigns vs GUNTHER. I don’t care how great and badass the wrestler is, I don’t know how you get over with a name like that.

But changing it after his incredible NXT UK run, having two of the best WWE matches EVER with Dragunov, and already appearing on both NXT and the main roster is so completely asinine

I don’t think either WALTER or GUNTHER are particularly great wrestling names, we were all just used to WALTER because it’s the dude’s real name, he chose to use it (so we had to shut up and accept it if we had any issue with it) and he’s accumulated a healthy career’s worth of badass and goodwill with that name. The man made the name WALTER credible. Now he has to try and do it again, but with the handicap of it being in the WWE system that is seemingly designed to work against the talent, not to mention the Nazi thing.

There’s also just the larger ongoing problem of WWE feeling the need to mess with and “adjust” things that DO NOT NEED TO BE MESSED WITH!! They’re obsessed with it and it almost never makes things better.

Hasn’t it been speculated in the past that Dolph Ziggler’s name is a reference to Adolph Ziegler, who was in charge of censoring art under the Nazis? Yes.

I don't think this is an intentional reference. I think it's WWE being stupid more than knowingly naming people after obscure Nazis. That said, for the love of God google things before this, especially since your company is in bed with another genocidal regime.

I'm locking this thread because the other thread on the matter was going round in circles with people getting more and more angry and we weren't going to have that just move over to this one.

Bumping because, according to PWInsider, WWE abandoned the trademark.
So if this topic wasn’t done with already, it’s doubly done now.
