It’s a toss up between Edge and Cena 08. With Edge there were rumblings (put totally intended) that he’d be making his return but I’ll be damned if I didn’t tear up a bit when that music hit and he walked out on the stage. Cena 08 was a huge surprise. Dude was supposed to be out at least another 4-6 months. That was the night we learned Cena was truly not human. Love him or hate him that was an all time Rumble moment. Triple H’s reaction told the whole story. Are you me? This is exactly what I was gonna post. Cena in the Garden with the old short entrance was magic. Edge returning was amazing but the leaks killed the shock value. I still cried tears of joy though.

AJ Styles. The internet didn't ruin it. Would love to say Edge, but it was rumored. Not a Cena fan but his was cool as hell well. Diesel also was sorta fun.

John Cena, AJ Styles, and Edge are my favorites.

Doug Gilbert on 1996. NOBODY watching saw that coming! Well, he won a USWA battle royal for the spot, so probably a few fans knew.

I'd say it was way, way more clear AJ would appear than Edge. Edge was possible but not confirmed or anything, maybe like 60/40. There was constant talk of AJ appearing for a few weeks prior.

Doug Gilbert on 1996. NOBODY watching saw that coming! Imagine thinking you're going to see Bam Bam Bigelow or Sid, but get Doug Gilbert and Dory Funk Jr. instead...

I'll always remember the Royal Rumble 01 being shown on Channel 4 and because it was on a slight delay so that they could shoehorn some adverts in, they cut to a break on the countdown when Big Show made his surprise return, except that all we got for a split second was a 'WEEEEELL...' and then we had to wait to come back to Show making his return, which was ultimately very anticlimactic. Haku turning up later was much more random.

I'd say A.J. Styles overall, but my personal favorite was Kharma. I was watching that Rumble along with my then boyfriend and his best friend, the friend gave me a cheerful tease when her music hit.

I’d disagree with that. If anything, the talk I saw was that AJ was going to be at Takeover or even they weren’t 100% sure about when he’d be coming. And like I said, even before it was leaked, I called Edge being in the Rumble from SummerSlam because, like, they wouldn’t have had him do the spear if there wasn’t a future plan.

I came here to say Cena. Not just because of the shock of him being there, but because the shock actually made the crowd pop huge for all of three seconds before they remembered they were supposed to hate him and then started booing. That was awesome. "YEAHHH!!!!!......WAIT..BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"

Carlos Colon in 1993 and Dicky Murdoch in 1995 Hey, Dick Murdoch threw a better dropkick in that match than John Cena ever has.

Carlos Colon in 1993 and Dicky Murdoch in 1995 Both were announced ahead of time, I believe. What was NOT announced ahead of time was that there was a lot of fire in that youngster Colon.

The only one that actually made me jump out of my seat was Nash returning as Diesel.
I'll never understand why they gave him a new entrance theme, though.

Nash coming out as Diesel was a childhood dream come true. The reaction he got was incredible. Yup. This is something I occasionally go back to and watch. Probably one of the loudest pops in Nash's career.

I have to vote for AJ. Him showing up was just a signifier of how much had changed in wrestling in a few years.
